ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team opened play at the Kelly Laas Invitational in St. Cloud by taking down Valley City State University 6-2 Friday night. The Beavers improved to 2-3 on the young season and will get its final tune-up before their spring training trip to Florida tomorrow with three games.
The game was the first of the spring season for the Vikings.
VCSU got on the board first in the game in the third inning, touching up starting pitcher Kelsey Saralampi (Sr., Esko, Minn.) for two runs when Hilary Kulczewski tripled home a run and scored on an error.
The Beavers knotted the score in the next half inning, as Lyndsey Peterson (Fr., P/IF, Cottonwood, Minn.) and Nicole Dupay (Jr., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) scored.
In the fifth inning, BSU pulled ahead and got the eventual game-winning run when Megan Bergeson (Jr., IF, New London-Spicer, Minn.) made it home on an error. Crystal Bowen (Sr., IF, Duluth, Minn.) then cushioned the Beavers’ lead with a two-RBI single that scored Dupay and Summer Monsrud (So., OF, Bemidji, Minn.).
Brittany Lenander (Jr., IF, Lino Lakes, Minn.) capped the scoring for the day in the sixth, scoring on a fielder’s choice.
Bemidji State finishes play against Dickinson State University (10 a.m.), St. Cloud State University (noon), and Minot State University in St. Cloud Saturday (4 p.m).
After this weekend, BSU will play 13 games in a six-day span over spring break in Titusville and Clermont, Fla. for spring training before opening conference play with a doubleheader at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The Beavers open at home with a pair of games against Wayne State College April 6.
