Golden Bears take two from Bemidji State

SAVAGE, Minn. (Savage Community Dome) – The Bemidji State University softball team came up empty in two games against Concordia University, St. Paul in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play Friday afternoon, falling 7-0 and 7-2 at the Savage Community Dome in Savage, Minn.

Heading into a doubleheader against Minnesota State University, Mankato Saturday, BSU stands at 7-14 overall on the season with a 1-3 mark in conference action.

Concordia, St. Paul got off to a fast start in the opening game and never looked back.

After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Bears scored two run in both the second and third before adding three in the fifth, handing Kelsey Saralampi (Sr., P, Esko, Minn.) her second loss of the weekend and dropping her record on the season to 4-7. The senior pitcher struck out three in four innings of work.

Nicole Dupay (Jr., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) saw an 11-game hit streak end in the loss, although she was one of five BSU players to reach base by drawing a walk. The junior outfield had seven multi-hit efforts in seven of the 11 games, including each of the last five entering the day. Senior infielders Crystal Bowen (Duluth, Minn.) and Molly Arola (Walker, Minn.) were the only Beavers to record hits as CU pitcher Ashley Kluever improved to 9-4 by tossing a 15-strikeout complete game.

In Game 2, Bowen powered the Beavers to a 2-0 first-inning lead, sending Dupay home with her second home run of the year. The lead was short-lived, however, as Concordia, St. Paul scored three times in the bottom of the inning. The Golden Bears got to seven again by tacking on two more runs in the third and one in the fourth and fifth to drop Allie Duellman (Jr., P, Maplewood, Minn.) to 2-4 on the season in the circle and 1-1 in NSIC play.

Dupay and freshman catcher Mikayla Osterman (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) each went 2-for-3 in the game (Dupay also walked once) as CU hurler Stephanie Kappes racked up 14 strikeouts in a complete game win, though which she improved to 7-2 in 2013.

The Beavers will remain in Savage for a doubleheader against Minnesota State. Next week, BSU travels to Minot State University Tuesday before opening its home schedule against Wayne State College and Augustana College on the weekend.
