BSU falls 9-1 and 8-1 against Minot State in road doubleheader

MINOT, N.D. (Herb Parker Stadium) – The Bemidji State University softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Minot State University on the road Wednesday afternoon, falling 9-1 in six innings and 8-1 to its Beaver counterpart in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. With the two losses, BSU now stands at 7-18 overall on the season with a 1-7 mark in conference play after losing six straight games.

League newcomer Minot State, which was slotted at 12th place in the league in the preseason coaches’ poll, is now 25-2 overall and is tied for first place in the NSIC with a 7-1 conference ledger.

MSU jumped out to an early lead in the first game and never looked back. The home squad amassed four runs in the first inning and added one more run in each of the last five innings for a 9-1 final. Top hitter Jen Dixon drove in three runs and Stacy Fournier, who drove in five runs in an 8-0 Minot State win over BSU March 2, had two RBI.

Kelsey Saralampi (Sr., P, Esko, Minn.) fell to 4-8 with the loss in the game, while Nicole Dupay (Jr., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) launched her second-career home run over the left field fence in the fourth to end what was previously a perfect game for MSU.

Bemidji State got off to an auspicious start in the second game when Brittany Lenander (Jr., IF, Lino Lakes, Minn.) reached base on an error and advanced to third before Crystal Bowen (Sr., IF, Duluth, Minn.) drove her in with a single to center field for the 1-0 lead.

The one-run edge was short-lived, however, as Minot State scored twice in the first inning and once more in the second. Bemidji State hung tough until the fifth and sixth when MSU tacked on five more runs to make it an 8-1 final. Fournier had three hits and two more RBI while teammate Katie Backes had a pair of hits and three RBI.

Pitcher Allie Duellman (Jr., Maplewood, Minn.) conceded seven earned runs over six innings and fell to 2-6 with a loss in the game.

BSU will have to travel out of state to play its first two home series of the year. BSU will play first-place Wayne State in Wayne, Neb. Saturday and will finish the weekend against NSIC adversary Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D. Sunday. Because the snow on Bemidji State’s home field caused the relocation, all four games will still count as home games for the Beavers. The team’s next schedule series in Bemidji is April 16 against St. Cloud State.
