Beavers thwarted by Northern State in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa The Bemidji State University softball team dropped its final two games of the weekend in Sioux City to Northern State University Sunday afternoon, falling by scores of 5-0 and 11-5 Sunday. Both contests counted as home games for BSU.

Northern State got on the board quickly in the first game before Beaver starting pitcher Allie Duellman (Jr., Maplewood, Minn.) settled down. After the leadoff runner got on base and came in and cleanup hitter Kelsey Robling came in to score, Haley Covais hit a two-run homer to give the Wolves a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

Duellman allowed another run in the fourth, but got out of a bases-loaded jam to keep Bemidji State alive, but the Beavers could not muster any offense and were shut out for the third consecutive game.

Molly Arola (Sr., IF, Walker, Minn.) led BSU offensively, collecting two of Bemidji State’s six hits.

In the second game, Jineane Williams (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn.) gave BSU its first lead of the weekend by hitting her first career home run to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The run was Bemidji State’s first in 18 innings of play.

The lead was short-lived, however. After Kelsey Saralampi (Sr., P, Esko, Minn.) retired the first two NSU hitters of the third inning, the next three Wolf hitters reached and Covais cleared the bases with a three-RBI double.

The Wolves opened the game up in the fourth after Macey Engel led off the fourth with a home run. Northern State tacked on four more runs before the inning ended.

Nicole Dupay (Jr., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) gave the Beavers life by hitting a two-run double in the fifth after the Beavers had already played one run in the inning, but a two-out liner by Williams was snagged by NSU second baseman Caitlin Moran and Bemidji State’s rally ended with runners on second and third.

BSU finishes its season next week by playing at the University of Mary Wednesday before hosting Upper Iowa University and Northern State University. The dates, times, and locations of those games are subject to change.
