Bemidji State tabbed 15th in preseason poll

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The Bemidji State softball team was pegged 15th in the 2014 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, announced by the league office Thursday. The Beavers received 35 points in the poll after the 2013 squad finished with an 8-39 overall and 2-28 NSIC record to rank 15th in the final conference standings. Bemidji State’s player to watch was senior outfielder Nicole Dupay (Woodbury, Minn.).

The defending NSIC Regular Season Co-Champions and NSIC Tournament Champions of Minnesota State University, Mankato along with Winona State University were the top picks in the poll. This marks the second year in a row that the Mavericks were atop the poll while WSU tops the poll for the fourth time since 2004. MSU and WSU amassed 209 points, while MSU received seven first place votes and WSU tallied six. Augustana College was picked third (184), followed by University of Minnesota Duluth (182) and Minot State University (177). Augustana, UMD and MISU also each received a first place vote.

Forty-two votes separated six through 10 in the poll. Concordia University, St. Paul was slotted sixth (153), followed by Wayne State College (152), St. Cloud State University (114), University of Mary (113) and Upper Iowa University (111). Northern State University (78 points), Southwest Minnesota State University (72 points), University of Sioux Falls (69 points), Minnesota State University Moorhead (41 points), Bemidji State (35 points) and University of Minnesota Crookston (21 points) finished 11 through 16.

Minot State’s Jen Dixon was named the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year, while U-Mary’s senior lefty Cherlyn Trujillo was named NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Bemidji State Player to Watch - #5 Nicole Dupay (OF, 5-3, R/R, Sr., Woodbury, Minn.)

Junior (2013): Dupay started all 47 games. She led the team with a batting average with a .326 mark, runs scored with 29, hits with 47 and home runs with five.  The five homeruns Dupay smashed last season tied her for third with most homeruns in a season in BSU history.

The softball team begins competition Feb. 25-26, when the Beavers travel to West St. Paul, Minn. to take on Valley City State University, Jamestown College, University of Wisconsin-Superior, and Carelton College.
