BSU softball drops doubleheader to Minnesota State

ST. PAUL, Minn. (West St. Paul Dome) – The Bemidji State University softball team began Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Sunday, dropping a pair of games to Minnesota State University, Mankato by scores of 11-3 and 11-0.

Minnesota State jumped out to 7-0 lead midway through the fourth inning in the first game against the Beavers, but BSU’s Jessica Yost (P/1B, Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) would launch a solo home run over the left field fence to get BSU on the board. Yost would plate two more runners in the fifth with a single, but that was all the offense that BSU could muster. MSU’s offense was hitting on all cylinders as it tallied at least one run in every inning except the sixth to defeat Bemidji State, 11-3.

In the second game, the Mavericks continued their offense, taking a 3-0 after the second inning. MSU would add five more in the fourth and three more in the fifth to give it an 11-0 lead which proved to be the final score.

BSU managed just eight hits on the day, with Yost recording three of them with three runs batted in. Angie Roberts (CF, Fr., Andover, Minn.) also had a picked up a pair of hits in the double dip.

In the circle, Yost earned the start in the first game of the day. She faced 39 batters, struck out three, and gave 10 earned runs on 16 hits. Fellow freshman Danielle Jecmen (P, Bloomingdale, Ill.) threw for BSU in the second game, giving up 10 hits, eight runs with one strikeout.

Bemidji State will return to the diamond tomorrow as it takes Concordia University, St. Paul at 10 a.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
