Beavers fall in conference doubleheader to Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. (Pete Chapman Softball Complex) – Despite home runs from Nicole Dupay (OF, Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) and Lyndsey Peterson (OF, So., Cottonwood, Minn.), the Wayne State College Wildcats gained a doubleheader sweep over the Bemidji State University softball team on Sunday. The Beavers lost the first game 6-0 before dropping the second game 13-5 in five innings.

WSC’s starter Kelcie Bormann pitched a no-hitter and recorded 16 strikeouts to lead the way for the Wildcats in game one.

Allison Roberts (P, Jr., Crystal, Minn.) was dealt with the loss for the Beavers, while Megan Bergeson (IF/C, Sr., New London, Minn.) was the only BSU hitter to reach base in the game as the senior drew two walks.

Wayne State got on the board quickly in the second game before Beaver starting pitcher Danielle Jecmen (P, Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill.) settled down. WSC scored 12 runs in the first three innings to chase Jecmen from the game. Roberts was called  on to relieve Jecmen.

BSU would try to make a comeback using the long ball. Dupay got things started with a solo home run in the fourth. Peterson followed that up with a three-run blast in the fifth to cut the deficit to seven. Unfortunately, the Wildcats would end BSU’s comeback attempt in the bottom of the fifth with a run and the game ended with a 13-5 final score.

The Beavers are set to begin a busy week of games as they are scheduled to play four doubleheaders all at the BSU Softball Field. It all gets started with a twin bill versus University of Minnesota Crookston Tuesday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
