St. Cloud State sweeps Bemidji State in NSIC twin bill

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (Selke Field) – The Bemidji State University softball team got a pair of short starts from its starting pitchers and it proved detrimental as St. Cloud State University swept the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in St. Cloud, Minn. by scores of 6-5 and 8-2.

Bemidji State had a rocky start to game one as the Huskies used an RBI ground out to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. SCSU followed that up with a five-run explosion in the second spearheaded by a two-run home run by Megan Larkin. The six-run outburst in the first two frames chased BSU’s starter Allison Roberts (P, Jr., Crystal, Minn.) from the game. Freshman Jessica Yost (P, Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) came in to relieve Roberts in the top of the third.

Bemidji State would chip away at St. Cloud State’s lead in the third with a run scoring single by Brittany Lenander (OF, Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) to plate Cassie MacArthur (IF, Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) who reached with a double to make it 6-1 SCSU.

BSU took a big chunk out of the Huskies’ lead in the bottom of the sixth. Nicole Dupay (OF, Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) would get the scoring started with a RBI single to plate Alayna Krejci (IF, Fr., Wausau, Wis.) to cut the deficit to four. The big hit, however, would come a batter later as MacArthur hit a three-run home run to cut SCSU’s lead to just one going into the final inning.

The Beavers threatened in the seventh as they got the tying run to second base with just one out, but SCSU reliever Kendra Merritt notched two key strikeouts to seal the 6-5 victory for St. Cloud State.

Yost’s relief effort was an integral part of BSU’s comeback attempt. Yost threw four scoreless innings of relief, scattered three Husky hits and struck out five.

Much like in game one, St. Cloud State scored six early runs to chase BSU’s starter from the game. This time SCSU’s bats roughed up Danielle Jecmen (P, Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill.) to tune of six earned in just two innings of work. Again, Yost came in to relieve for Bemidji State.

Bemidji State did not mount the comeback that it did in game one, but it scored a pair of runs with a Krejci home run in the fourth. Unfortunately, the Huskies scored a run off of Yost in the fifth and sixth to clinch an 8-2 victory.

Next up for Bemidji State (11-21, 0-16 NSIC) is a double dip on the road against Northern State University at 1 p.m. Friday.
