Northern State sweeps Bemidji State in doubleheader

ABERDEEN, S.D. (Mocassin Creek Softball Complex) – The Bemidji State University softball team lost a pair of games to Northern State University Friday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Wolves followed a 4-2 victory with a 7-1 win to complete the doubleheader sweep. The Beavers fall to 11-23 (0-18 NSIC).

Senior Brittany Lenander (OF, Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) and freshman Courtney O’Connor (C, Fr., Shakopee, Minn.) each collected two hits, but it was not enough as Northern State took game one, 4-2.

Northern State opened the scoring with three runs in the third frame. BSU answered with RBI hits by O’Connor and Danielle Jecmen (P, Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill.) in the fourth to cut the deficit to one.  After the Beavers closed the gap, NSU starter Kami Smesmo buckled down and struck out seven BSU hitters over the final three innings to seal the Wolves’ victory. Smesmo finished with 14 strikeouts.

Freshman Jessica Yost (P/1B, Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) made her first start since April 5, and took the loss in game one moving her record to 3-6. The Bemidji, Minn. native allowed four runs (three earned), scattered seven hits and struck out five in six innings.

Northern State’s bats showed up in a big way in game two. The Wolves opened a 7-0 lead after three innings, which was more than enough for starter Missy Elkins. Elkins allowed just two hits in seven innings to earn her third win of the season.

Lenander notched a triple in the first and Jecmen singled in the sixth to account for BSU’s two hits.  Bemidji State’s lone run came in the seventh inning when it scored an unearned run on a RBI groundout by pinch hitter Chelsey Watson (IF, So., Clearwater, Minn.).

Jecmen took the loss moving her record to 5-11. After allowing the seven runs on eight hits through the first three innings, Jecmen settled down and allowed just two base runners over the final three innings.

Bemidji State will return to action tomorrow as it faces Minnesota State University Moorhead at 3 p.m. in Aberdeen, S.D.
