ABERDEEN, S.D. (Mocassin Creek Softball Complex) – The Bemidji State University softball dropped a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader to Minnesota State University Moorhead in a Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D. MSUM took game one by a score of 8-0 in five innings and notched a walk-off win in game two, 4-3.
Bemidji State falls to 11-25 and 0-20 in NSIC play following the twin bill.
MSU Moorhead jumped on the Beavers early and often in game one. The Dragons chased BSU starter Jessica Yost (P/1B, Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) from the game after just five outs. Yost allowed six runs (four earned) and six hits in the abbreviated start.
Allison Roberts (P, Jr., Crystal, Minn.) came in to relieve Yost and did a solid job. Roberts went two-and-one-third innings and allowed two runs on four hits.
Bemidji State’s bats had a rough go of it against Dragon starter Morgan Nybo. Nybo allowed just three hits in five innings. The loss marked the sixth time that the Beavers were shutout this season.
Nicole Dupay (OF, Sr., Woodbury, Minn.), Alayna Krejci (IF, Fr., Wausau, Wis.) and Emily Varner (IF, Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) collected BSU’s hits.
In game two, Megan Boser (IF, Fr., Pierz, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, but it was not enough as the Dragons won the game with a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh, 4-3.
Bemidji State took a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning with run-producing hits from Dupay and Mikayla Osterman (C, So., Sierra Vista, Ariz.), but the Dragons cut the deficit to one and then scored a pair in the seventh to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Roberts started in the circle for the Beavers and threw the first three innings. The junior hurler surrendered just one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Danielle Jecmen (P, Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill.) relieved Roberts in the fourth. The Dragons threatened to score in every inning against the BSU reliever. Jecmen held the Dragons off the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth, but MSUM broke through in the final two frames to deal Jecmen the loss. Jecmen’s record drops to 5-12.
Bemidji State will close out the 2014 season this week with four doubleheaders. The Beavers will host University of Minnesota Crookston Tuesday and University of Mary Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m. both days. BSU will then conclude the season on the road at Winona State University and Upper Iowa University Friday and Saturday, respectively.
