WINONA, Minn. (Alumni Field) – No. 20 Winona State University used strong pitching to sweep a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader from the Bemidji State University softball team Friday afternoon at Winona, Minn. by scores of 11-0 and 6-0. With the pair of losses, Bemidji State drops to 11-29 overall, 0-24 NSIC.

Winona State’s starting pitcher Ashley Walker not only threw four innings with nine strikeouts, but also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs to lead the Warriors to an 11-0 victory in game one.

The Beavers hurt themselves with four errors in the day’s first contest. Those errors led to six runs and were instrumental to the nine-run fourth inning.

Jessica Yost (P/1B, Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) was tagged with the loss after going 3.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and 10 runs (five earned). Yost’s record moves to 3-8 with the loss.

Yost, Emily Varner (IF/OF, Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) and Courtney O’Connor (C, Fr., Shakopee, Minn.) collected hits for BSU in game one.

In game two, Bemidji State’s starter Danielle Jecmen (P, Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill.) allowed just one run through the first five innings, but the Warriors erupted for five in the bottom of the sixth to win by a score of 6-0.

Warrior starting pitcher Hanna Lythberg kept Bemidji State’s bats in check as she allowed just two hits over seven innings to shutout the Beavers. Lyndsey Peterson (OF, So., Cottonwood, Minn.) and Megan Boser (IF, Fr., Pierz, Minn.) notched the hits for Bemidji State.

Bemidji State will close out the 2014 season at noon tomorrow versus Upper Iowa University.
