Bemidji State softball adds five during early signing period

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University softball program announced five student-athletes to its 2015 signing class Friday. Rochelle Koshalek (P, Mosinee, Wis.), Makayla Pagel (UTL/C, Kronenwetter, Wis.), Megan Castor (IF, Dillworth, Minn.), Kelsey McAlister (P/UTL, Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Jessica Burlingame (OF, Andover, Minn.) all signed National Letters of Intent to join the BSU softball program in 2016.

All signees are contingent upon admission to BSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Rochelle Koshalek • Pitcher • 5-8

Mosinee High School • Mosinee, Wis.
At Mosinee HS: Great Northern Conference Player of the Year in 2013 & 2014…First team All-District selection and two-time captain for the Indians…Second team All-State selection in 2014…Gannelt Central Wisconsin Media Player of the Year…Helped lead the Indians to a state championship as a senior.

Head Coach Rick Supinski on Koshalek: “We had her out for a visit and we liked her composure and the great movement on her pitches,” said Supinski, “We look for Rochelle to step in right away and help us in the circle.”

Personal: Daughter of Robert and Kay Koshalek born Dec. 30, 1996… Plans to study biology/pre-med at BSU.

Makayla Pagel • Utility player/ Catcher • 5-10

DC Everest High School • Kronenwetter, Wis.
At DC Everest High School: Led the state of Wisconsin in home runs during her junior season with 12…Second Team All-State as a sophomore and junior…Named team captain as a senior…Also an All-Wisconsin Valley Conference second team selection in basketball…Helped the Evergreens win conference championships as a junior in both basketball and softball.

Supinski on Pagel: “She is one of the best bats I have seen in a long time,” said Supinski, “She has excellent hands and she has the potential to be an offensive threat for us from day one.”

Personal: Daughter of Jerry and Ann Pagel born Nov. 29, 1996…Intends to major in physical education with a minor in coaching at BSU.

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School • Dilworth, Minn.
At Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School: Was a two-time All-Heart-O-Lakes All-Conference selection in softball as a junior and sophomore…Also earned a gold glove award…Named Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School’s Outstanding Athlete…A member of the Section 8AA Honorable Mention team.

Supinski on Castor: “Megan is very athletic so she can step in and play multiple positions,” commented Supinski, “Although she has been an infielder, I can see her also helping in the outfield because of her speed.”

Personal: Daughter of Jeff and Jennifer Castor born Jan. 27, 1997…Undecided on a major at BSU.

Centennial High School • Lino Lakes, Minn.
Centennial High School: Has earned two athletic letters in softball for the Centennial Cougars…All-Northwest Suburban Conference Honorable Mention selection as a sophomore…Named All-Section and All-Conference teams as a junior…Named Centennial’s Offensive Player of the Year…Will be the Cougars captain this spring. 

Supinski on McAlister: “Kelsey is another versatile player that we can move all around the diamond,” remarked Supinski, “She has played outfield, first base and has also pitched so she gives us a lot of flexibility with our lineup.”

Personal: Daughter of Aaron and Denise McAlister born Sept. 12, 1997…Proposed nursing major at BSU.

Jessica Burlingame • Outfielder • 5-5

Andover High School • Andover, Minn.
Andover High School: Named All-Northwest Suburban Conference in 2014…Hit .326 with two doubles last season…Has earned athletic letters in softball (two) and gymnastics (two).

Supinski on Burlingame: “Jessica is an outfielder who will add some speed to our lineup,” commented Supinski, “Offensively, we think she would be an ideal bunter and slap hitter to have at the top of our order to make things happen.”

Personal: Daughter of Michael and Anita Burlingame born June 30, 1997…Undecided major at BSU.

Bemidji State finished the 2014 season with an 11-31 record. The 11 victories were the most for the Beavers since 2006 when they finished with 17. BSU will return 10 players from last season’s team and will begin the 2015 season Feb. 25-26 with four non-conference games against Minnesota State University Moorhead (twice), University of Minnesota Crookston and Minot State University.
