Bemidji State goes 1-1 in day two of the Tucson Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Bemidji State University softball team split a pair of games in the second day of competition at the Tucson Invitational Sunday. The Beavers dropped a high-scoring affair to Concordia University, Nebraska 13-8, but rebounded to knock off Nyack College 2-1 in game two. BSU moves to 4-4 this season with the results today.

Game 1 Recap: Bemidji State jumped on the Bulldogs early as it totaled eight runs in the first two innings. Concordia-Nebraska would not be denied, however, as it pecked away at the Beavers’ lead with three in the second, three in the third and two in the sixth to knot the game at 8-8. In the top of the seventh the Bulldogs erupted for five runs to knock off Bemidji State, 13-8.

Angie Roberts and Jessica Yost, who went three-for-four and two-for-three at the plate respectively, led BSU’s offense in game one. Roberts scored twice and knocked in one run, while Yost launched a two-run home run in the second and plated another run with a single in the first.

Game 2 Recap: Unlike game one, the second contest of the day was all about pitching. Sophomore Jessica Yost notched her second double-digit strikeout game of the season as she struck out 13 Warrior hitters in seven innings to help propel BSU to a 2-1 victory.

Both of Bemidji State’s runs came when it made outs on the play. Erin Robson plated the first run with a ground out to second base scoring Kaitlyn Shea. BSU’s second run came as a result of a sacrifice fly by Lexi Ripka in the fifth to score Mikayla Osterman.

Notes on the Beavers:

  • Angie Roberts was BSU’s top hitter Sunday going six-for-eight at the plate with two runs scored and another knocked in. Roberts, who has started in centerfield every game for BSU this season, is hitting .448 with two RBI this season.
  • Sophomore Jessica Yost turned in her second double-digit strikeout performance of the season with 13 strikeouts in game two. Yost has 34 strikeouts in 20 innings and improved to 3-1 with the victory over Nyack College.
  • BSU’s winning run in game two came in the fifth inning, which continues a trend as it is outscoring its opponents 21-12 in the fourth and fifth innings of games this season.

Next up: BSU will look to get above .500 in day three of the Tucson Invitational. The Beavers will take on Dordt College at 4:30 p.m. before finishing off the day with a rematch against Nyack College around 7 p.m.
