Bemidji State sweeps a pair of games Monday in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Bemidji State University softball team swept a pair of games on day three of the Tucson Invitational. The Beavers defeated Dordt College in a slugfest in game one, 9-7 before knocking off Nyack College 5-3 in the nightcap. With the pair of victories, BSU moves its record to 6-4 this season.

Game 1 Recap: Bemidji State’s offense got off to a hot start in the first game of the day as it got out to a 9-1 lead after three innings of play. The Defenders had to make an early call to the bullpen and the change in pitchers made a tremendous difference. Dordt College’s reliever, Amanda Malinowski, came in and threw three-and-two-thirds innings allowing just two runs on two hits to give her team a chance to come back.

Malinowski’s effort in the circle looked like it provided the spark the Defenders needed as they batted around in the fifth inning plating six runs off BSU’s pitching staff to make the score 9-7.

Like Dordt College did earlier, Bemidji State called on a reliever to stop the offensive outburst and it worked just the same. Jenna Massingill came in and threw two-and-two-thirds innings in relief allowing two runs and three hits to preserve the 9-7 win for the Beavers.

Bemidji State had a pair of players notch multiple hits against the Defenders. Leading the way was freshman Erin Robson who went two-for-three with a home run and drove in five of BSU’s nine runs. Alayna Krejci also went two-for-three with two runs scored and knocked in one run in the victory.

Game 2 Recap: Like in game one, BSU jumped out to an early lead on its opponent. The Beavers led 3-0 after three innings as Jessica Yost knocked in all three runs with a sacrifice fly in the first and a two-run double in the third.

Senior Allison Roberts kept the Warriors’ bats in check allowing just one run through the first five innings. Roberts, however, ran into trouble in the sixth as Nyack College got a leadoff single from Kelsie Land and Meghan Richards launched one over the fence to tie the game at 3-3.

After the home run by Richards, Yost was called on to relieve Roberts and retired three batters on 13 pitches with two strikeouts and a pop out to keep the score tied going into the final inning.

It did not take long for the Beavers to answer in the top half of the seventh. Angie Roberts got things started with a single and freshman Lexi Ripka followed that up with her first collegiate home run to put the Beavers on top for good, 5-3.

Notes on the Beavers:

  • Freshmen Erin Robson and Lexi Ripka both tallied their first collegiate home runs today. Robson and Ripka are batting .250 and .333, respectively in their first seasons as Beavers.
  • Sophomore Jessica Yost continues to be a threat in the circle and at the plate this season for the Beavers. Yost knocked in four more runs today to give her 12 RBI in 10 games so far this season. In addition to her work with the bat, Yost has also been BSU’s best pitcher so far this season with a 4-1 record with a 2.55 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 22 innings of work.
  • With the pair of wins today, the Beavers have won three consecutive games for the first time since March 11-12, 2014.

Next up: Bemidji State will look to extend its three-game winning streak tomorrow as it continues play in the Tucson Invitational. The Beavers will face Cedar Crest College at 11 a.m. and will round out the day facing Missouri Valley College around 1 p.m.
