No. 14 Winona State takes a pair from Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Softball Field) – No. 14 Winona State University allowed just one run in two games to sweep the Bemidji State University softball team in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the BSU Softball Field. The Warriors knocked off BSU 5-1 in game one and shutout Bemidji State 8-0 in the second game. The Beavers move to 12-10 overall and 3-3 in league play with the pair of losses, while Winona State improves to 22-7 overall and 4-0 in conference action.

Game 1 Recap: Game one was a pitcher’s duel between WSU’s Ashley Walker and BSU’s Jessica Yost, as both hurlers kept the opposing teams off the scoreboard through the first three-and-a-half innings.

Bemidji State broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run by Lexi Ripka to give BSU a 1-0 lead. The Warriors answered in the following half inning with a two-run single by Reed Karsten to give WSU its first lead of the day, 2-1.

The score remained at 2-1 until the top of the seventh when Winona State plated three runs on four hits and one error by the Beavers to increase its lead to 5-1.

The four-run deficit proved too large for the Beavers as they dropped their second consecutive game, 5-1.

Game 2 Recap: After a scoreless first inning, Winona State seized control of the momentum and never let it go scoring three in the second, one in the third and two in the fifth and seventh innings en route to an 8-0 victory.

In the circle, Hanna Lythberg pitched a complete game shutout allowing five hits while striking out six BSU hitters to earn her 11th victory of the season. Ashley Walker led the Warriors at the plate going three-for-four with two runs scored.

Bemidji State posted five hits in game two with two of them coming off the bat of Jaclyn Braiedy. Cassie MacArthur, Lyndsey Peterson and Ripka also notched hits for BSU. Senior Allison Roberts took the loss for Bemidji State in the circle after working the first three innings, allowing three earned runs.

Notes on the Beavers

  • Lexi Ripka hit her second home run of the season in the first game versus Winona State. With Ripka’s home run today, the Beavers have hit 19 long balls. BSU, who has allowed only 10 home runs this season, has already surpassed its home run total from last season (13).
  • Jaclyn Braiedy was BSU’s top hitter against the Warriors going four-for-six. Braiedy, who is currently on a five-game hitting streak, leads BSU’s freshman class with a .333 batting average this season.
  • Today the Beavers played regular season games at the BSU Softball for just the second day in the past three seasons. BSU also played at its home field April 22, 2014 against University of Mary.

Next up: Bemidji State will embark on an eight-game road trip beginning Tuesday with a doubleheader at University of Mary. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Bismarck, N.D.
