Marauders sweep doubleheader from the Beavers, 3-2, 7-3

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Bemidji State University softball team dropped a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) games to University of Mary Tuesday afternoon in Bismarck, N.D. The Beavers dropped game one by the score of 3-2 and fell in game two, 7-3. With the pair of losses, BSU’s record moves to 12-12 overall and 3-5 in NSIC play.

Game 1 Recap: The Marauders got the scoring started in the bottom of the third with a two-run double by Taylor Mendez to give U-Mary an early 2-0 advantage.

BSU cut U-Mary’s lead in half in the top of the fifth with solo home run off the bat of Jessica Yost to make the score, 2-1. The Marauders answered in the following half inning as Mendez plated Alayna Norman for the second time to put the home team back out front by two.

Bemidji State closed the gap once again in the top of the sixth with an unearned run to make it 3-2, but BSU was not able to tie the game, as it dropped its fourth consecutive game, 3-2.

U-Mary’s starting pitcher Nena Dudley held BSU’s offense to four hits in seven innings of work with 13 strikeouts to earn her 11th win of the season. Yost took the loss for Bemidji State after allowing 10 hits in six innings with seven strikeouts. Yost’s record moves to 9-4 this season with the loss.

Game 2 Recap: U-Mary scored in each of the first four innings in game two to gain a 7-0 lead over the Beavers. BSU cut the deficit to four with a three-run fifth inning, but that’s where the comeback ended as the Marauders completed the doubleheader sweep, 7-3.

Lyndsey Peterson, Lexi Ripka and Kailtyn Shea, who all went two-for-three in game two, led Bemidji State at the plate. Ripka plated two of BSU’s three runs with a single in the fifth and fellow freshman Erin Robson drove in the team’s other run with a sacrifice fly.

Sophomore Danielle Jecmen was saddled with the loss after working the first two innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. Despite Jecmen’s short start, Bemidji State was able to hang around due to the relief appearance by Jenna Massingill. Massingill held U-Mary to one run on five hits over four innings with five strikeouts in relief.

Notes on the Beavers

  • Jessica Yost hit her third home run of the season and fourth of her career in game one. Yost is one of four players that have three home runs this season joining Lyndsey Peterson, Courtney O’Connor and Cassie MacArthur. The three home runs by each player are tied for the third-most in program history for a single season.
  • Lyndsey Peterson reached base in both games today against U-Mary. Peterson has reached base safely in 14 consecutive games and in 22 of 24 games this season.
  • Freshman Jaclyn Braiedy posted a hit in both games. Braiedy has a hit in six of BSU’s eight conference games so far.
  • With the pair of losses, the Beavers are now on a five-game losing skid. BSU’s longest losing streak previous to this one was two.

Next up: The Beavers continue on their eight-game road swing with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. BSU faces off against Concordia University, St. Paul in a double dip Friday followed by a pair with Minnesota State University, Mankato Saturday. Both doubleheaders are set to begin at noon.
