Bemidji State earns a sweep over Wayne State, 2-1, 4-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Softball Field) – The Bemidji State University softball team swept Wayne State College in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the BSU Softball Field. The Beavers won game one by a score of 2-1 and followed that up with a 4-1 victory to complete the sweep.

Game 1 Recap: The first game of the day was a pitchers’ duel from the outset, as the two starting pitchers combined to throw 13 innings, while allowing 11 hits, three runs and striking out 18.

Kelcie Bormann, who also started in the circle for the Wildcats, produced the game’s first run with double scoring Rachel Shumaker from second base. After Bormann’s double, Wayne State could not come through with a clutch hit against BSU’s starter Jessica Yost, as it went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position the rest of the game.

The score remained 1-0 until Lyndsey Peterson came through with a RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. Bemidji State took the lead an inning later when Angie Roberts doubled on a 0-2, two-out pitch to score Monica Wittner.

After the go-ahead double by Roberts, Yost turned in two shutout innings to preserve the 2-1 victory for Bemidji State. Yost improved her record to 11-6 after allowing six hits, one run and striking out nine in seven innings.

Game 2 Recap: Peterson tallied a pair of run-producing doubles and Yost launched a two-run home run, while Jenna Massingill turned in her best start of the season to propel the Beavers to their second conference sweep of the season with a 4-1 win.

Massingill, who earned her first win of the season, allowed one run on eight hits in seven innings to hold the Wildcats to one run in back-to-back games for the second time this season (March 25 vs. Augustana College).

In addition Peterson and Yost, Roberts and Mikayla Osterman turned in multi-hit performances and Lexi Ripka scored two of BSU’s four runs after going one-for three.

Notes on the Beavers

  • The win in game one was the first for BSU against Wayne State since April 9, 2007, which spanned 15 straight games.
  • With the pair of wins Saturday, Bemidji State has 15 overall wins and six NSIC wins this season. Those two win totals are sixth and fourth most in program history, respectively.
  • Peterson had three doubles Saturday to give her 12 two-baggers in 2015. The 12 doubles not only ties Peterson’s own program record for the most in a single season but it also brings her career total to 31 which establishes a new program record surpassing the old mark (29) set by Stephanie Gray (1994-97).
  • Yost earned her eleventh victory of the season in game one, which the third-most by a pitcher in single season in program history. The Bemidji, Minn. native needs three more victories (14) to tie the record for the most victories in a season.
  • The Beavers earned their second NSIC sweep of the season, which is the most for the team since 2003 when they swept University of Minnesota Crookston and Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Next up: Bemidji State will look to maintain the momentum it gained today Sunday as it takes on No. 12 Augustana. First pitch for the NSIC doubleheader is scheduled for noon at the BSU Softball Field.
