BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team begins its 2016 campaign Monday, Feb. 22 and Tuesday, Feb. 23 traveling to St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the Dragon-Beaver Battle tournament. The Beavers will face the University of Minnesota Duluth, Central Lakes College, and Minnesota State University, Moorhead in the four-team tournament.

The Beavers begin the tournament by facing Minnesota Duluth noon on Monday, followed by an exhibition against Central Lakes College at 2 p.m. BSU will wrap-up the final day of the tournament, Tuesday against MSU Moorhead and UMD. Game one will begin at 8 a.m. followed by game two at 10 a.m.

Beavers Return 10 From 2015

The 2016 Bemidji State softball team has 10 student-athletes returning from the 2015 season. Of those 10, five played in 46 or more games last season including senior Lyndsey Peterson who was a Second Team All-NSIC selection. Peterson led the Beavers in batting average (.362), doubles (16), and tied with Jessica Yost for the team lead in homeruns (9) and RBI (30). Also returning for the Beavers is outfielder Angie Roberts who was second on the team in batting average (.337), and led in hits (55) and stolen bases (7).

The Beavers return two starters in the pitching circle in Jessica Yost and Jenna Massingill. Yost appeared in the most games for BSU with 31 and led the team in wins (12), ERA (2.80) and strikeouts (185). Massingill compiled a 1-7 record for BSU in 25 appearances and made one save.

Bemidji State Adds Seven

The Bemidji State softball team has added seven freshmen to its roster for the 2015-16 season. Joining the Beavers this season are Rochelle Koshalek (Mosinee, Wis./Mosinee HS), Megan Castor (Dilworth, Minn./Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton HS), Brooke Phillips (Iola, Wis./ Iola HS), Jessica Burlingame (Andover, Minn./Andover HS), Makayla Pagel (Kronenwetter, Wis./D.C. Everest Senior High), Kelsey McAllister (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Victoria Adams (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Copper HS).

Beavers Tabbed To Finish 14th in NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll

The Bemidji State University softball team was selected to finish 14th in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Preseason Coaches’ Poll on Jan. 21. Defending NSIC Tournament Champions, Winona State University, garnered the most points in the poll after receiving nine first place votes and 219 points. Regular season champions Augustana University finished second in the poll with four first place votes and 208 points. Minnesota State University, Mankato was voted third with three first place votes and 198 points.

Peterson and Yost named Bemidji State’s Players to Watch

Senior Lyndsey Peterson and junior Jessica Yost were named Bemidji State’s players to watch for the 2016 season.

Peterson was BSU’s most productive player in her junior season and was selected to the All-NSIC Second Team. The Cottonwood, Minn., native led the Beavers in batting average (.362), home runs (9), on-base percentage (.435), runs (27), RBI (30), doubles (16) and walks (17). Her nine homeruns and 16 doubles set new program records for the Beavers.

Yost was dominant in both the pitchers circle and batters box during her sophomore campaign at BSU. The Bemidji, Minn. native led the Beavers in wins (12), ERA (2.80), complete games (16), and strikeouts (185). She also batted .216 and tied a program best with nine homeruns.
