BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball continues the non-conference portion of its 2016 schedule this week and travels to West St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the Dragon-Beaver Battle II, March 3-4. The Beavers (5-2) will face Viterbo University, Dickinson State University and Minnesota State University, Moorhead during the tournament.

Beavers Go 3-1 in St. Cloud

The Beavers return to action after spending last weekend on the road at St. Cloud, Minn., for the St. Cloud Dome Games, Feb. 27-28. BSU went 3-1 in the tournament and defeated Concordia-St. Paul, University of Minnesota, Crookston and Minot State University before falling to Concordia-St. Paul in their second meeting.

Yost Named NSIC Pitcher of the Week

Bemidji State University softball junior Jessica Yost has been named as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, March 1. Yost helped the Beavers go 5-2 to open the 2016 season and went 4-0 in the pitcher’s circle during the week.

This is the first time in her career the Bemidji, Minn., native has earned this weekly award.

Yost started the week’s play by delivering a one-hit shutout of the University of Minnesota Duluth in a 1-0 victory and struck out a career best 16 batters. She helped the Beavers defeat the Bulldogs for a second time on Feb. 23 and Concordia-St. Paul on Feb. 27 before recording her second one-hit shutout of the week against Minot State University, Feb. 28.

During the week, Yost had an unblemished record at 4-0 and went all seven innings in every game. She tallied 46 strikeouts during the week and only walked one batter. The feat that is most impressive, however, is that she allowed only one earned run over the course of the week for an ERA of 0.25.

Scouting Viterbo

The V-Hawks will see their first action of the season this week after spending the past few weeks playing exhibitions and scrimmages in Winona and Rochester, Minn. Viterbo returns their leading pitcher from a season ago in Kirsten Tomlinson who had a 1-19 record for the V-Hawks.

The NAIA school member finished last season with a 5-35 record under first year head coach Brandi Alonzo.

Scouting Dickinson State

The Blue Hawks enter the week’s action with a 1-3 record after spending last weekend in Aberdeen, S.D. competing in the Presentation Dome Tournament. Dickinson State is led at the plate by senior Alex Vargas who has a batting average of .462 with two homeruns and six RBI.

MSU-Moorhead is led at the plate by Kristy Bruni who has a batting average of .833 and in six at-bats, has five doubes. Kristen Nordby leads the Dragons in the circle with a 1-0 record and an ERA of 2.00.
