Offense powers Bemidji State to two wins against Indiana Tech and Bridgeport

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bemidji State University softball team earned two wins on the second day of the Spring Games Tournament in Clermont, Fla., Monday. The Beavers (11-4) defeated Indiana Tech, 12-8 and Bridgeport University, 10-6.

Bemidji State 12, Indiana Tech 8

The Beavers totaled the second most hits on the season with 14 and tied a season-high with 12 runs en-route to a 12-8 victory over the Warriors. Bemidji State scored 11 runs in the first five innings and outscored Indiana Tech, 11-3 and survived a last inning comeback by the Warriors to seal the win.

Senior Lyndsey Peterson led the Beavers at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Six different Beavers tallied an RBI in the game, including two from freshman Jessica Burlingame who went 3-for-5 with a triple.

Junior Jessica Yost remained perfect in the circle for the Beavers and improved her record to 8-0 by allowing two earned runs in 4.2 innings. Freshman Rochelle Koshalek came in relief of Yost and pitched 2.1 innings without allowing an earned run.

Bridgeport 6, Bemidji State 10

Bemidji State used a late rally to overcome a one-run deficit in the sixth inning to down the Purple Knights, 10-6. BSU held a 3-2 throughout the early innings in the game but Bridgeport scored four runs in the sixth inning to pull ahead. The Beavers responded quickly however, and scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead.

Bemidji State didn’t look back from there and closed out the final game of the day with the 10-6 victory.

Freshman Brooke Phillips led the Beavers at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI while Peterson tallied her fifth and sixth RBI’s of the day by going 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Koshalek earned her first win of her career after coming in to pitch two innings in the fifth. Koshalek allowed just one run, none earned, and just two hits after coming in relief of Jenna Massingill who pitched five innings and allowed three hits and two earned runs.

The Beavers will be back in action in Clermont again tomorrow and will face Bridgeport again and St. Thomas-Aquinas College at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
