Yost throws one-hit shutout as Beavers split third day

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bemidji State University softball team split the third day of the Spring Games Tournament in Clermont, Fla., Tuesday. The Beavers (12-5) fell to the University of Bridgeport 5-4, but rebounded by defeating St. Thomas-Aquinas College, 1-0. Junior Jessica Yost threw her fourth one-hitter of the season and improved to 9-0 in the circle.

Bemidji State 4, Bridgeport 5

The Beavers and Purple Knights faced each other for the second time Tuesday, after Bemidji State previously defeated Bridgeport 10-6 in their last meeting, March 14.

BSU jumped to an early lead by scoring three runs in the second inning. MaKayla Pagel hit a double and Kelsey McAllister scored off of an error to begin the inning while Alayna Krejci followed with an RBI single and later came around to score for the Beavers.

After a scoreless third inning and BSU came up empty in the fourth inning, the Purple Knights scored five runs in the bottom half of the fourth to overtake the lead, 5-3. Krejci hit her second RBI single in the sixth inning to make pull within one of Bridgeport, but the Beavers were held scoreless in the seventh as the Purple Knights were victorious, 5-4.

Krejci finished the game by going 2-for-3 with two RBI while Kesley McAllister went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

St. Thomas-Aquinas 0, Bemidji State 1

Bemidji State’s defense dominated in the second game of the day and Jessica Yost threw her fourth one-hitter of the season and also drove in the game-winning run to help the Beavers defeat the Spartans, 1-0.

BSU scored the lone run of the game in the fifth inning when Yost hit a double that scored Angie Roberts from second.

Yost went all seven innings for the seventh time this season allowing just one base runner, a single in the fifth inning. She struck out 10 batters in the game and for the fifth time this season, didn’t surrender a walk. Yost improves to 9-0 and boasts a 0.68 ERA second in the NSIC.

The Beavers will be back in action in Clermont again tomorrow and will face Bentley University and Franklin Pierce University at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
