Three home runs lead Beavers to 6-3 win over No. 15 WSU; Second game cancelled

FAYETTE, Iowa. – The Bemidji State University softball team defeated No. 15 Winona State University, 6-3, and had the second game of its doubleheader cancelled, Friday afternoon. Junior Jessica Yost tallied 15 strikeouts and went all seven innings for the Beavers (18-6, 1-0 NSIC) to earn her 12th victory of the season.

Lyndsey Peterson, Jessica Yost, and Alayna Krejci each hit two-run home runs for each of the Beavers’ six runs in the game.

With the win, Bemidji State earns its 18th win of the season tying last season’s mark and the second highest wins total since the Beavers earned 25 wins in 1998.

The Beavers hit their first home run of the game in the first inning when Peterson drove on over the center field wall that also scored Yost. The Warriors responded however, and in the second inning scored three after a bases clearing double.

BSU retook the lead in the third when Yost helped her effort in the circle with a home run that scored Kelsey McAllister. Yost was then dominant in the circle from then on and five shutout innings for the remainder of the game. Krejci extended the Beavers’ lead with a home run to left field scoring Angie Roberts and pushed the lead to 6-3.

Yost pitched her 11th complete game of the season and struck out 15 to earn her 12th win of the season. She also went 2-for-3 in the game and scored two runs.

Bemidji State will resume Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action tomorrow and will face Upper Iowa University for a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
