Beavers fall in both games against Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa. – The Bemidji State softball team fell in each game of its doubleheader with Upper Iowa University, Saturday. The Beavers (18-8, 1-2 NSIC) fell in game one, 3-1, and then again in game two, 4-2.

Bemidji State 1, Upper Iowa 3

Both pitchers dominated in game one and each team was held scoreless through the first five innings. The Beavers opened the scoring in the sixth when Alayna Krejci singled with the bases loaded and drove in Lyndsey Peterson. However, the Peacocks responded in the bottom half of the inning after a pair of home runs that scored three.

The Beavers had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the seventh but failed to advance the runners to end game one, 3-1.

Jessica Yost held the Peacocks to just three hits in the game and had eight strikeouts but earned just her second loss of the season.

Bemidji State 2, Upper Iowa 4

Game two resembled the first game in that the first three innings were controlled by the pitchers. Both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning when Upper Iowa scored three runs off of three hits. The Peacocks would extend their lead to four in the next inning and held a 4-0 lead over the Beavers until the seventh inning.

Bemidji State got a hot start to the inning when Peterson drove a ball over the wall to lead off the inning and make it 4-2. Krejci would reach base as the next batter for BSU but a double play on the next at bat quickly changed the momentum in the inning. Kelsey McAllister pulled the Beavers within two when she hit her conference leading seventh home run of the season.

However, the Beavers couldn’t find a way to complete the comeback and fell to the Peacocks 4-2 in the final game of the day.

The Beavers will play their home opener on Tuesday, March 29 and hosts the University of Mary.
