WAYNE, Neb. – The Bemidji State University softball team fell to Wayne State College (Neb.) in both games of its doubleheader, Sunday in Wayne, Neb. The Beavers now fall to 21-15 and 4-9 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
Bemidji State 2, Wayne State (Neb.) 3 (F/8)
The Beavers held a two-run lead for most of the game but a seventh inning rally by the Wildcats forced extra innings where WSC earned the 3-2 victory.
Junior Jessica Yost shutout the Wildcats for the first six innings and senior Lyndsey Peterson hit a two-run home run in the third inning to put BSU ahead 2-0. The Beavers had two outs in the seventh but the Wildcats were able to tie the game after a pair of RBI hits to force extra play.
BSU had the go-ahead run on third in the eighth inning but a pitching change for the Wildcats was enough to retire the next to batters and end the inning. A lead-off double for the Wildcats and then a pair of singles completed the comeback and gave Wayne State the game one victory.
Peterson led BSU at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI while Yost pitched 7.1 innings with three earned runs and five strikeouts.
Bemidji State 3, Wayne State (Neb.) 6
A lead-off solo home run by Lyndsey Peterson got the Beavers off to a quick start in game two but Wayne State added a run of their own in the bottom of the first to even the score again.
After three scoreless innings, the Wildcats would be next to score and gained a five run lead after two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. The Beavers tried to comeback in the seventh after RBI’s from Brooke Phillips and Angie Roberts, but the Wildcats’ lead was too much and they earned the sweep with a 6-3 win.
Peterson and Phillips each went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Jenna Massingill falls to 6-6 this season after going five innings allowing three runs but struck out nine.
The Beavers will be on the road on last time before returning to Bemidji, Minn., and will face St. Cloud State University Tuesday, April 12.
