Beavers end regular season with sweep of Dragons

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team ended its 2016 regular season by sweeping Minnesota State University, Moorhead, Saturday. The Beavers (31-17, 14-11 NSIC) end the regular season with a program best 31 wins and eighth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Standings.

Bemidji State 3, MSU-Moorhead 1

A two-run home run by Jessica Yost broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning and provided the Beavers with the go ahead runs they would need to down the Dragons 3-1 in game one.

The Dragons scored early with a run in the first inning but the Beavers were able to match them in the second when Makayla Pagel took advantage of a Dragon error to score. Yost then powered through the next three innings in the circle and didn’t allow a run. She the stepped up to the plate in the fifth and with Alexandra Ripka on base, drove a ball over the centerfield fence.

Yost then followed by holding the Dragons scoreless over the next three innings as Bemidji State won game one, 3-1. Yost only allowed four hits in the game and struck out 12 batters to earn her 17th win of the season. She also led the Beavers at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Bemidji State 2, MSU-Moorhead 0

Senior Jenna Massingill threw a two-hit shutout for the Beavers as BSU earned the sweep over MSU-Moorhead with a 2-0 win in game two. Massingill pitched her eighth complete game and made 10 strikeouts to earn her 12th win of the season.

The Beavers took advantage of a Dragon error in the third inning that scored Mikayla Osterman and then extended their lead to two off of an RBI single by Lyndsey Peterson in the seventh.

Jessica Burlingame had two hits in the game and went 2-for-4 as the Beavers totaled seven hits as a team.

As the eighth seed the Beavers will face the ninth seed in the NSIC Tournament on April 28 held in Sioux Falls, S.D. at Sherman Park. Complete brackets for the tournament will be released at a later date.
