Beavers sweep Wolves in NSIC action Sunday

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team swept Northern State University Sunday to improve to 5-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. The Beaves (15-6, 5-1 NSIC) made quick work of the Wolves (18-10-1, 3-2-1 NSIC) winning two games by run-rule.

Senior pitcher Jessica Yost led the Beavers to victory after earning two wins in the circle and holding the Wolves to just six hits on the day.

Northern State 1, Bemidji State 9 (F/5)

The Wolves would score their only run of the day in the first inning of game one after a throwing error by the Beavers’ defense allowed a runner to score from second. Their lead wouldn’t last long however and in the bottom half of the inning RBI’s from Yost and Kelsey McAllister put BSU ahead 2-1.

Bemidji State would be kept off the scoreboard in the second inning but an RBI single in the third from Yost extended the Beavers’ lead to 3-1. Freshman Olivia Tucker hit a two-run home run in the fourth to make it 5-1 while the Beavers tallied four runs in the fifth inning to end the game by run-rule. An RBI double from Brooke Phillips followed by two RBI’s from Alayna Krejci made it 8-1 while Lexi Derrick singled up the middle to bring in the game-winning run.

After the first inning, Yost pitched four straight scoreless innings and surrendered just two hits to the Wolves. She earned 10 strikeouts in the circle and improved to 10-2 on the season.

Northern State 0, Bemidji State 8 (F/5)

Head coach Rick Supinski sent out Yost to start game two of the day and the Bemidji, Minn., native didn’t slow down. She followed game one by pitcher her fourth shutout of the season and eleventh complete game as the Beavers defeated the Wolves 8-0 after five innings.

The Beavers opened the scoring from a sacrifice fly by Yost in the first followed by three runs in the second, two runs in the third, and two runs in the fourth.

Phillips hit a two-RBI single in the second inning and Jessica Burlingame hit an RBI single to put the Beavers up 4-0. McAllister hit an RBI double in third while Krejci hit a sacrifice fly to center field for the 6-0 lead. BSU then followed with a sacrifice fly from McAllister in the fourth and and RBI single by Makayla Pagel for the game’s final run.

Yost also dominated at the plate and was the Beavers’ best hitter on the day by going 4-for-5 over two games with two doubles and three RBI. Phillps, Krejci and McAllister all tallied three RBI on the day.

Yost’s complete pitching line during the day is 10 innings pitched, two wins, two complete games, six hits, no earned runs and 17 strikeouts.

Bemidji State continues conference play with a mid-week series on the road at University of Mary, Tuesday at 1 p.m.
