Beavers split first conference road series at U-Mary

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Bemidji State University softball team split its Northern Sun Intercollegiate road series at University of Mary Wednesday afternoon. The Beavers (16-7, 6-2 NSIC) defeated the Marauders (8-25, 2-6 NSIC) in game one, 4-1, but fell in game two, 8-0, in six innings.

Bemidji State 4, U-Mary 1

After being named the conference pitcher of the week and national co-pitcher of the week, senior Jessica Yost continued to dominate in the circle, this time against the Marauders.

Yost pitched all seven innings for her 12th complete game of the season while holding the Marauders to just one earned run off of seven hits. She tallied six strikeouts in the game without allowing a walk and improves to 13-2 on the season.

It was a pitcher’s duel to start the game as neither starter gave up a run in the first three innings. However, U-Mary would strike first in the fourth when a fielder’s choice drove in a run for the game’s first tally. The Beavers would respond in the top of the fifth after a RBI single by Jessica Burlingame.

BSU added two more runs in the top of the sixth when Brook Phillips tripled down the left field line scoring Angie Roberts and Alayna Krejci. Yost added a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh and sent down the Marauders 1-2-3 in the bottom for the 4-1 victory.

Burlingame led the Beavers by going 3-for-4 at the plate and tallied an RBI while Angie Roberts and Brooke Phillips each went 2-for-3.

Bemidji State 0, U-Mary 8 (F/6)

The Beavers would struggle in the second game and would be shutout for just the second time this season. BSU totaled eight hits in the game but went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left six runners on base.

U-Mary started quickly in game two scoring two runs in the first and three runs in the second for the 5-0 lead. The Marauders scored a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to close out the game by run-rule after six innings.

Sophomore Rochelle Koshalek earned the loss in the circle falling to 2-3 on the season. She allowed five earned runs off of nine hits before being replaced by Kelsey McAllister in the fifth inning.

Krejci and Olivia Tucker each tallied two hits in the game to lead the Beavers at the plate.

BSU will return home this weekend and host Upper Iowa University and Winona State University for a Saturday-Sunday series at the BSU Softball Field.
