Seniors lead Beavers to sweep of Wildcats

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University team swept Wayne State College (Neb.) 3-1 and 5-1 Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.

The Beavers 22-15 (12-10 NSIC) rallied in the sixth inning of game one and used two runs in the first inning of game two to complete the sweep of the Wildcats (11-35, 5-17 NSIC).

Game one would be a tight low scoring battle between the Beavers and Wildcats. Both pitcher’s held their opponents scoreless through the first three innings.

Wayne State tallied the first run of the game in the fourth however and WSC’s pitcher Riley Vanderveen held the Beaves scoreless in the fifth inning. After senior Jessica Yost sent down the Wildcats in the sixth, BSU rallied to tie the game when Yost hit a RBI single. Fellow senior Alayna Krejci then followed with an RBI double to center field to put the Beavers ahead, 3-1.

Yost then responded by sending down the Wildcats in order in the top of the seventh to earn her 18th win of the season. The Bemidji, Minn., native held Wayne State to just three hits in the game and allowed just one run while earning seven strikeouts.

The Beavers would use two runs in the first inning of the second game to defeat the Wildcats, 5-1. Kelsey McAllister started the scoring with a sacrifice fly followed with a run scored off on error to go up 2-0.

Yost continued in the circle from game one and kept the Wildcats scoreless through four innings. McAllister relieved Yost in the fifth inning and in the sixth, WSC pulled within one of the Beavers. However, the Beavers responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs to extend its lead to 5-1. Rachel Burkland started the inning with a sacrifice fly followed by two runs for the Beavers’ after a fielding error by WSC.

McAllister recovered in the seventh to shut down the Wildcats and earn her first save of the season. Yost earned the win after pitching four innings not allowing a run and struck out six.

The Beavers will close out their home schedule tomorrow by hosting Augustana University at noon.
