Yost holds Bulldogs to just one run to in sweep of Minnesota Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. – Bemidji State University senior softball pitcher Jessica Yost pitched all 14 innings and earned two wins in the circle to help the Beavers (24-15, 14-10 NSIC) sweep University of Minnesota Duluth, Tuesday afternoon.

Yost allowed just one run over both games and tallied 24 strikeouts to improve to 21-5 on the season, becoming the first-ever pitcher in program history to reach the 20-win mark.

Bemidji State 5, Minnesota Duluth 0

Yost began the series by holding the Bulldogs to just four hits and pitched her six shutout of the season in a 5-0 win.

The Beavers opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning when a runs scored off of a wild pitch and sophomore Brooke Phillips hit a two-RBI double. BSU added two more runs in the fourth inning when Phillips hit a two-run home run for her third and fourth RBI’s of the game, a career-best for the sophomore.

Phillips totaled three hits in the game and went 3-for-4 with a single, double and home run. Senior Alayna Krejci also tallied three hits in the game by going 3-for-4 while Makayla Pagel and Angie Roberts each tallied two hits.

Yost struck out 14 batters in the circle to earn her 20th win of the season, a career high for Yost, and becomes the first-ever pitcher to reach the 20-win mark.

The Beavers would use another dominant pitching performance by their senior pitcher to down the Bulldogs 8-1 in game two

The Beavers started the scoring in the first inning when Jessica Burlingame scored on a passed ball and Yost hit a RBI double to go ahead 2-0 early. The Bulldogs would respond however, with their only run of the game on a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.

BSU extend its lead to 4-1 with RBI’s from Krejci and Pagel. Pagel added three more RBI’s in the fifth inning with a three-run home run. The Beavers scored their final run of the game when Rachel Burkland drove in a run in the top of the seventh.

Yost pitched all seven innings for the second consecutive game and held the Bulldogs to just five hits allowing just the one earned run and struck out 10 while only walking one.

Yost is now 21-5 in the circle this season and became the program’s all-time wins leader (54) and strikeout leader (775).

The Beavers will wrap up the regular season on the road this weekend when they travel to face University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State University, April 29 and 30, respectively.
