Beavers fall in doubleheader at Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Bemidji State University softball team dropped two games at University of Sioux Falls Saturday afternoon to fall to 24-17 and 14-12 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

Bemidji State 0, Sioux Falls 3

Game one would be a battle within the circle with neither team able to total more than five hits. Senior pitcher Jessica Yost held the Cougars to just four hits in the game and didn’t allow an earned run but was bested by Kerrigan Hoshaw who got the win by holding the Beavers to three hits.

The Cougars scored all three of their runs off of defensive mistakes by BSU in the fourth inning.

Senior Angie Roberts tallied two of the Beavers’ three hits in the game while Yost fell to 21-6 on the season after pitching all six innings.

Bemidji State 4, Sioux Falls 6

The Beavers’ bats came alive for game two and came together to total 13 hits in the game and scored four runs. However, BSU couldn’t hold the Cougars to three runs like game one and fell to USF, 6-4.

USF scored first with a run in third inning but the Beavers responded in the top of the fourth with four runs to take the lead. Olivia Tucker started the scoring with an RBI walk followed by RBI singles from Rachel Burkland, Roberts and Jessica Burlingame.

The Cougars bounced back however and tallied a run in the bottom of the inning to pull within two.

After a scoreless fifth inning for each team, BSU was unable to add to its tally in the top of the sixth but the Cougars scored four runs in the bottom frame to retake the lead at 6-4. The Beavers were unable to tie the score in the top of the seventh and fall to 24-17 on the season.

Yost pitched the first three innings in the game holding the Cougars to one run and three hits and gets the no decision. Sophomore Kesley McAllister came in to pitch in the fourth inning and gave up five runs off of six hits to earn the loss.

The Beavers will close out the 2017 regular season tomorrow by traveling to Southwest Minnesota State University for a doubleheader at noon.
