Bemidji State softball extends win streak to four but split Tuesday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bemidji State University softball team totaled 21 hits over two games to extend its win streak to three game Monday afternoon at the Spring Break Tournament in Clermont, Fla. The Beavers (5-7) began the day with five hits in a 3-2 win over Indiana University-South Bend and piled on 16 hits in a 16-1 win over Clarion University to end the day.

St. Thomas Aquinas 1, Bemidji State 2
The Beavers would extend its season-best winning streak to four games behind the pitching arm of sophomore Megan Pehrson who pitched a complete game and held the Spartans to one run and six hits.

St. Thomas Aquinas began the scoring with a solo homerun by game’s second batter for the early 1-0 lead. The Beavers responded in the bottom half of the innings when senior Alexdra Ripka drove in junior Jessica Burlingame with a sacrifice hit. Bemidji State grabbed the lead in the third inning when junior Makayla Pagel hit an RBI double bringing in Brooke Phillips for the go-ahead run.

Pehrson responded by pitching six shutout innings after the first to earn her first win as a Beaver. The Cohasset, Minn., native struck out three batters while not allowing a walk.

Pagel led the Beavers at the plate by going 2-for-3 with an RBI while Phillips, Kesley McAllister and Ripka each recorded a hit.

Bemidji State 4, Millersville 7
The Beavers fell victim to a late game comeback by the Marauders to end their four-game winning streak. Bemidji State held a 4-0 advantage through the first three innings but Millersville scored seven unanswered runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to win, 7-4.

Bemidji State started the scoring when Jessica Burlingame scored on a passed ball in the first inning followed by a two-RBI double by the junior later in the second. BSU added another run in the third when senior Kristin Monkamn hit an RBI single to go up 4-0. After a pitching substitution by the Marauders, the Beavers would go scoreless through the remaining four innings.

Freshman Stephi Dullum pitched all six innings for BSU and allowed seven earned runs off of 10 hits to fall to 3-4 on the season. Burlingame led the Beavers by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored while Monkman and Megan Castor each totaled two hits.

Bemidji State will have Wednesday off from action but returns Thursday to face University of California-Pennsylavnia and Millersville again early in the morning.
