Beavers earn split against Cal-Pennsylvania and Millersville

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bemidji State University softball team split its fifth day at the Spring Break Tournament Thursday by falling to California University-Pennsylvania 5-0 but rebounded with a 4-0 win over Millersville University.

Cal.-Pennsylvania 5, Bemidji State 0
Bemidji State began the morning by falling to the Vulcans 5-0 in the early morning actions. The Beavers totaled six hits in the game but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position to come up empty on the scoreboard. BSU made three errors in the game which the Vulcans were able to bring in four runs off of the errors.

Sophomore Olivia Tucker pitched 3.1 innings and allowing just two unearned runs but was awarded the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season. Sophomore Megan Pehrson came in to pitch 3.2 innings in relief and allowed just one earned run.

Senior Alexandra Ripka was the lone Beaver to collect multiple hits in the game and went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Bemidji State 4, Millersville 0
In game two of the day, the Beavers used a three-run third inning to down the Marauders 4-0 and earn the split.

Junior Jessica Burlingame began the inning with an RBI double and came in to score later off a wild pitch. Junior Kelsey McAllister doubled to centerfield that brought in Makayla Pagel for the 3-0 lead.

Bemidji State added to its lead in the top of the seventh with McAllister’s second RBI of the game after driving home Pagel once again.

Megan Pehrson earned the complete game shutout, the first of her career, after holding the Marauders to just three hits while also striking out nine, a career-best. Pehrson improved to 2-0 with the win while the Beavers improved to 7-9 on the season.

Burlingame, Pagel, Olivia Tucker and Logan McDonnel each collected two hits in the game while McAllister finished the day by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI.

Bemidji State concludes play at the tournament tomorrow when they face Slippery Rock University and Lock Haven University.
