Beavers split series with Wolves to open conference play

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Bemidji State University softball team opened Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Friday night by splitting its doubleheader at Northern State University in the Presentation College Dome in Aberdeen, S.D. The Beavers (12-12, 1-1 NSIC) defeated the Wolves (11-11, 1-1 NSIC) 6-2 in game one but fell in game two, 4-2.

Bemidji State 6, Northern State 2
Bemidji State jumped to an early lead over Northern State when junior Kelsey McAllister drove in two runs in the top of the first. The Beavers extended their lead to 3-0 with an RBI double from Brooke Phillips in the second but the Wolves answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-1.

BSU scored two more runs in the fourth from a sac fly by Phillips and RBI single by Makayla Pagel to lead 5-1. The Beavers made it 6-1 off of an error by the Wolves in the sixth scored Phillips for her second run of the game.

Sophomore Megan Pehrson held the Wolves to just one run and four hits through the first six innings but a solo homerun in the seventh pulled NSU within four. Pehrson would be able to get all three outs in the inning for the complete game win. She finished by holding the Wolves to just five hits and two runs and remains perfect on the season with a 3-0 record.

Phillips led the Beavers at the plate by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI while Jessica Burlingame, Kelsey McAllister and Logan McDonnel each recorded two hits in the game.

Bemidji State 2, Northern State 4
The Beavers rallied from down 2-0 in the fourth inning to tie the game in the fifth but a two-run fifth inning propelled the Wolves to a 4-2 win and split in game two Friday night. Olvia Tucker began the scoring for BSU with a sac fly in the fourth while junior Rochelle Koshalek hit her second career homerun with a solo shot in the fifth.

However, an error by the BSU defense in the bottom of the fifth gave the Wolves the go-ahead run. Bemidji State totaled eight hits in the game including two from Brooke Phillips and Kesley McAllister but went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left six runners on base in the loss.

Freshman Stephi Dullum pitched 4.2 innings in her first NSIC contest and allowed three earned runs off of 11 hits and went without a strikeout to fall to 6-6 on the season.

Bemidji State continues the weekend’s play in Aberdeen, S.D., by facing Minnesota State University, Moorhead for a conference doubleheader also at the Presentation College Dome. The Beavers and Dragons begin play at 1 and 3 p.m.
