Beavers drop two at St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (Husky Dome) - The Bemidji State University softball team fell in both games of its doubleheader at St. Cloud State University Wednesday afternoon in the team’s first games since March 31. The Beavers (13-15, 2-4 NSIC) fell by scores of 8-5 and 4-1 in the series and drops to 2-4 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

Bemidji State 5, St. Cloud State 8
The Beavers would take an early lead over the Huskies but a five-run third inning by SCSU derailed the Beavers in their first game since March 31. Bemidji State got up early on St. Cloud State after Brooke Phillips drove in two runs and Kelsey McAllister drove in one in the top of the third for the 3-0 lead. However, the Huskies answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning capped off by a grand slam to gain a 5-3 lead.

The Beavers responded to tie the game the very next inning when Phillips drove in her third run of the game and Makayla Pagel drove in her team-leading 23rd run of the season. However, the Huskies would take advantage of runners in scoring position later in the fifth inning and scored three runs to take the 8-5 lead. SCSU’s Bradi Yost would hold the Beavers to just one hit over the final three innings to earn the 8-5 win for the Huskies.

Phillips finished the game 1-for-2 at the plate and totaled three RBI while Jessica Burlingame, Pagel and Sami Dullum each totaled two hits for the Beavers.

Sophomore Megan Pehrson earned the loss in the circle after pitching five innings and allowed eight runs, four of which were unearned off of 10 hits.

Bemidji State 1, St. Cloud State 4
The Beavers struggled to get their bats going in game two of the day and totaled just one run on seven hits against the Huskies to fall 4-1.

The Huskies tallied two runs in the first and third innings but BSU’s lone run in the game came off of a solo homerun by Makayla Pagel in the fourth for her team-best sixth homerun of the season.

Just five Beavers totaled a hit in the game including two from Kelsey McAllister and Olivia Tucker who each went 2-for-3.

Freshman Stephi Dullum pitched all six innings for BSU, allowing four runs off of nine hits and struck out four to fall to 7-7 on the season.

The Beavers will look to rebound Friday, April 13 when they travel to face Minnesota State University, Mankato at the West St. Paul Dome in West St. Paul, Minn., for a doubleheader that was originally scheduled to be in Bemidji.
