Beavers begin final homestand with doubleheader against Bulldogs

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team begins its final week of regular season play by hosting University of Minnesota Duluth for a doubleheader Wednesday, April 25. The Beavers (15-23, 4-12 NSIC) and Bulldogs (34-9, 16-4 NSIC) begin play for game one at 2 p.m., for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series.

Scouting the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs enter Wednesday’s action 34-9 on the season and receiving votes in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association poll. UMD stands third in the NSIC standings with a 16-4 league record and split its last action at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Minnesota Duluth is led at the plate by Hannah Schmoll who is batting .441 in 145 at bats and has 32 RBI off of 64 hits. Becky Smith leads the team with 54 RBI on the season and is batting .387 in 150 at bats. In total, the Bulldogs have seven student-athletes who are batting above .300 including six who hit above the .350 mark.

The Bulldogs pitching staff is split between Breanna Swint and Valerie Hohol who each have made 20 and 21 appearances, respectively. Swint leads the team with a 16-3 record and has a 3.15 ERA in 113.1 innings pitched while Hohol closely follows at 14-4 and a 3.36 ERA in 112.2 innings pitched. Ashley Taipale has also come in to pitch in 10 games and has a 3.94 ERA in 26.2 innings.

Bemidji State Notes

  • The Beavers enter the week 14th in the NSIC standings and have lost four consecutive games after being swept at No. 16 Augustana University and Wayne State College.
  • The Beavers are led by junior Makayla Pagel at the plate who is batting .394 in 127 at bats. Pagel also leads the team in hits (50), homeruns (7), RBI (27) and slugging percentage (.598).
  • Junior Brooke Phillips follows and is hitting .369 in 111 at bats and is tied for the team lead with 24 runs scored.
  • Four Beavers are hitting above .300 on the season including three above .360.
  • Freshman Stephi Dullum leads the BSU pitching staff with 21 appearances in the circle. She has posted a 7-10 record and has an ERA of 3.64 in 102 innings.
  • Dullum is also ninth in the NSIC with 78 strikeouts this season.
  • Sophomore Megan Pehrson has made 18 appearances and follows Dullum with a 4.62 ERA in 69.2 innings. Pehrson and junior Rochelle Koshalek each have posted 3-4 records this season for second on the team.
