Late inning rallies by Minnesota Duluth leads to sweep of BSU softball

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team fell in both games of its doubleheader with University of Minnesota Duluth Wednesday afternoon at the BSU Softball Field. The Bulldogs (36-9, 18-4 NSIC) rallied in the sixth and seventh innings to sweep the Beavers (16-24, 4-14 NSIC) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

Minnesota Duluth 5, Bemidji State 2
The Bulldogs held just a one-run advantage over the Beavers until the sixth inning in game one before UMD sealed the win with two runs in the top of the sixth. UMD jumped to an early 3-0 lead after a three-run homerun in the top of the first inning.

However, the Beavers responded by scoring a run off of an error and an RBI single from sophomore Lexi Derrick to pull within one of the Bulldogs. Minnesota Duluth pitcher Breanna Swint held the Beavers off of the scoreboard for the next six innings, however, and secured her 17th win of the season.

Freshman pitcher Stephi Dullum held the Bulldogs to just five hits but allowed five runs to fall to 7-11 on the season.

The Beavers were held to four hits by Swint while Derrick led BSU by going 2-for-3 while senior Logan McDonnel and junior Brooke Phillips tallied the remaining hits.

Minnesota Duluth 14, Bemidji State 2
After going six innings tied at 2-2, Minnesota Duluth exploded for 12 runs in the top of the seventh to defeat the Beavers 14-2 in game two.

After UMD scored a run in the first inning, BSU responded with a run in the bottom of the from when senior Lexi Ripka hit an RBI single to tie the game. The Bulldogs answered quickly in the second to retake the lead at 2-1, but BSU responded off the bat of senior Lacy Hiltner who hit her first career homerun, a solo shot to centerfield, to re-tie the game at two.

Sophomore Megan Pehrson pitched the next four innings and held the Bulldogs scoreless heading to the top of the seventh. However, the Bulldogs would score seven runs off of Pehrson in the inning and she was relieved by sophomore Rachel Burkland. UMD added five runs to cap off the 12-run seventh inning and sent down BSU in order in the bottom of the frame to earn the 14-2 victory and sweep.

BSU was outhit 18-8 in the game but held an 8-6 lead until the Bulldogs fired off for 12 hits in the seventh. Lexi Ripka, Lacy Hiltner and junior Rochelle Koshalek each totaled two hits in the game to lead the Beavers.

Pehrson earned the loss in the circle and falls to 3-5 on the season after allowing nine earned runs off of 13 hits.

The Beavers wrap up the regular season this weekend and host Southwest Minnesota State University and University of Sioux Falls, April 28-29.
