Beavers conclude season by honoring its seniors

BEMIDJI, Minn. – On the last day of the 2018 season, the Bemidji State University softball team honored its five seniors in part of senior day against University of Sioux Falls. The Beavers (17-27, 6-16 NSIC) fell in both games of its doubleheader with the Cougars (30-17, 15-9 NSIC) by scores of 4-2 and 6-2.

BSU celebrated the careers of Logan McDonnel, Lacy Hiltner, Lexi Ripka, Kristin Monkman and volunteer assistant Erin Robson between games.

Sioux Falls 4, Bemidji State 2
Bemidji State had a tough time finding empty space in the field in game one and totaled just five hits to fall to USF, 4-2. The Cougars jumped to an early 3-0 lead with two runs in the fist and one run in the third but the Beavers pulled within two in the bottom of the third when Makayla Pagel hit an RBI single.

Sioux Falls added a run in the sixth while BSU attempted a comeback in the seventh when junior Rochelle Koshalek hit an RBI double but fell short of the comeback and fell 4-2.

Koshalek also pitched the complete game for the Beavers and allowed just two earned runs while striking out one but fell to 3-5 on the season.

Five Beavers recorded a hit in the game while Pagel and Koshalek were the only ones to drive in runs.

Sioux Falls 6, Bemidji State 2
A pair of solo home runs would be the lone scoring plays for the Beavers as BSU fell to the Cougars 6-2 in game two. USF started the game with a run in the first but a home run from senior Lexi Ripka in the second tied the game.

However, USF answered back with three runs in the third to go up 4-1. The Beavers pulled within two in the bottom of the frame when junior Jessica Burlingame hit her fourth homerun of the season. BSU would be unable to get back on the scoreboard and after runs in the fifth and sixth, the Beavers fell 6-2 in game two.

The Beavers were out-hit in the game 9-5 and were led by sophomore Olivia Tucker who went 2-for-3. Koshalek started her second consecutive game and pitched 2.2 innings allowing three earned runs and was credited with the loss while freshman Stephi Dullum and sophomore Rachel Burkland each came in to pitch 2.1 and 2.0 innings, respectively.

The Beavers end their season with a 17-27 overall record and 6-16 in league play and miss out on the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Softball Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D.
