Beavers split first day of Dragon/Beaver Battle

West St. Paul, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team opened the 2019 season by splitting the first day of the Dragon/Beaver Battle at the West St. Paul Dome in West St. Paul, Minn. The Beavers (1-1, 0-0 NSIC) began the day by defeating University of Minnesota Crookston 5-3 but fell to Southwest Minnesota State University, 3-1.

Minnesota Crookston 3, Bemidji State 5
Bemidji State began the morning by defeating the Golden Eagles 5-3 in non-conference action. The Beavers got on the scoreboard first in the first inning when Makayla Pagel hit an RBI single to go up 1-0. However, a solo homerun followed by scoring off a throwing error put the Golden Eagles up 2-1.

The Beavers wouldn’t be able to reach the scoreboard again until the fifth inning when Kelsey McAllister hit an RBI single followed by a two-run homerun by Pagel to retake the lead at 4-2.

Minnesota Crookston would answer in the sixth inning with an RBI double but the Beavers answered right back with an RBI from Lexi Derrick for the 5-3 lead.

Senior Rochelle Koshalek came in to pitch the final three innings after junior Megan Pehrson pitched four innings and allowed just two runs. Koshalek held UMC scoreless in the final inning and sealed the 5-3 victory for the Beavers. She also earned the win, her first of the season, after pitching three innings and allowed just one run off of five hits.

Southwest Minnesota State 3, Bemidji State 1
Game two of the day would turn out to be a defensive battle with neither team able to break onto the scoreboard until the fourth inning. The Mustangs scored first in the top of the fourth after scoring two runs off of a throwing error. The Beavers answered quickly however, by scoring a run off of a Mustang error in the next inning to bring the score to 2-1.

However, SMSU’s pitcher Athena Golling was lights out in the circle and the Beavers’ hitters couldn’t find a way to crack her. Golling earned 11 strikeouts in the game and allowed just four hits and one unearned run.

SMSU added to its lead with an RBI double in the sixth but it wasn’t necessary as Golling pitched all seven innings and allowed just the one run.

Senior Jessica Burlingame went 2-for-2 at the plate and had two stolen bases while senior Brooke Phillips was 1-for-2 with a double.

Sophomore Stephi Dullum earned her first loss of the season after pitching six innings and allowing seven hits and three runs.

The Beavers are back in action for day two of the Dragon/Beaver Battle and will face Minnesota State University, Moorhead and Minnesota Crookston at 9 and 11 a.m.
