Pitching fuels Beavers to two wins in Florida

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Bemidji State University softball team’s pitching staff held opponents to just one run over two games to lead the Beavers (8-4) to two wins on day 2 of the spring break trip in Leesburg, Fla. Sophomore Stephi Dullum pitched a complete game and allowed just one run as the Beavers defeated Quincy University 6-1 in game one while freshman Kaidron McClafferty pitched a complete game shutout against Southern Connecticut State University en-route to a 4-0 victory.

Sophomore pitcher Stephi Dullum dominated the circle in the Beavers’ first game of the day Tuesday morning against the Hawks. Dullum held Quincy to just four hits in the game and pitched a near shutout after the Hawks scored an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Beavers’ bats totaled seven hits in the game and drove in six runs to claim the 6-1 victory and were led by senior Jessica Burlingame who went three-for-four in the game with an RBI and scored two runs.

Bemidji State started the scoring with RBI singles from Burlingame and senior Makayla Pagel as well as adding a run off of a Hawks error to go up 3-0 in the third inning. BSU then added three more runs in the fifth when Kelsey McAllister and Oliva Tucker hit RBI singles followed by another run off of an error to extend the lead to 6-0 and coast to the 6-1 victory.

Dullum improvers to 5-2 on the season after pitching the complete game and allowed just one run, unearned, while striking out two.

Freshman Kaidron McClafferty shined in just the fourth appearance of her collegiate career by holding the Owls to just four hits and no runs to earn her first career victory and shutout. Bemidji State’s offense supported McClafferty with four runs in the game and were led by Pagel who totaled three hits including two doubles and two RBI.

The Beavers started the scoring late in the game when Pagel hit her first double which scored senior Jessica Burlingame in the fourth inning. BSU then totaled three runs in the next inning off of RBI doubles from Brooke Phillips and Pagel as well as a RBI single from Burlingame.

McClafferty pitched all seven innings for her first career complete game and struck out six batters, the most of her fresh career.

Bemidji State will look to carry momentum into tomorrow’s games when they face Post University and Dominican College at 3:45 and 6 p.m.
