Beavers extend win streak to six with pair of shutout victories

WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team cruised to two shutout wins over Finlandia University and Bethany Lutheran College at the West St. Paul Dome Wednesday afternoon. The Beavers (15-7) extended their win streak to six games after defeating Finlandia University 16-0 and Bethany Lutheran College 11-0, both in five innings.

The Beaves’ offense exploded for 16 runs off of 14 hits against Finlandia in the first game of the day Wednesday morning as BSU defeated the Lions 16-0 in five innings. Eight different Beavers collected a hit the game including three from freshman Elaina Christiansen while senior Rochelle Koshalek held the Lions to just one hit in five complete innings.

Bemidji State scored a run in every inning and began with three runs in the first and second innings followed by a run in the third and three more in the fourth. The Beavers then drove in six runs in the fifth to seal the 16-0 victory and earn their 14th win of the season.

Christiansen led the Beavers by batting 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. Her game was capped off by hitting the first home run of her career, a three-run bomb in the second inning. Sophomore Sami Dullum joined Christiansen by also hitting her first career home run, a three-run drive in the fourth inning while junior Olivia Tucker hit her first career grand slam in the fifth inning. Dullum and Tucker each drove in four RBI in the game setting new career highs for the pair.

Koshalek improved to 2-2 on the season after one of the best outings of her career by earning her first career one-hitter and her third career shutout. Koshalek pitched all five innings for the complete game and struck out a career-high eight batters.

The Beavers scored in double digits for the second consecutive game as BSU fired for 11 runs off of 12 hits in the second game of the day against Bethany Lutheran. The Beavers defeated the Vikings by a score of 11-0 in five innings and earned their second consecutive shutout.  Senior Jessica Burlingame went 2-for-4 in the game and hit her third career grand slam to lead the team with four RBI. Sophomore Stephi Dullum held the Vikings to just three hits in the game and earned her fourth career shutout.

Bemidji State started the scoring in the third inning when Makayla Pagel hit a two-run double and Kesley McAllister followed with an RBI single to put the Beavers up 3-0. The Beavers didn’t score in the fourth inning but hammered in eight runs in the fifth inning highlighted by Burlingame’s grand slam to earn the five inning victory.

Five different Beavers totaled an RBI in the game including four from Burlingame and two from Pagel while Elaina Christiansen, Burlingame, Pagel and Lexi Derrick each came in to score two runs.

Dullum improved to 7-3 with the win and pitched her fifth complete game of the season to lead the Beavers and earned five strikeouts against the Vikings. Dullum continues to lead BSU with a 1.15 earned run average in 60.2 innings.

Bemidji State continues play at the WSP Dome tomorrow morning and will face Bethany Lutheran again at 10 a.m., followed by Concordia College-Moorhead at Noon.
