BSU Softball ends season with split with No. 14 Augustana on Senior Day

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Five Bemidji State University softball seniors ended their careers for the green and white Saturday afternoon by helping the Beavers (24-30, 7-23) earn a victory over a top-25 team for the first time since 2016. The Beavers began Senior Day by upsetting No. 14 Augustana University (S.D.) 3-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Vikings (46-8, 26-3 NSIC) responded however, with a 3-0 victory in game two.

(14) Augustana 1, Bemidji State 3
Bemidji State got clutch performances when they needed them to help upset the No. 14 Vikings by score of 3-1. Sophomore Stephi Dullum pitched a complete game and held the Vikings to just one run off of seven hits while clutch RBI’s from seniors Makayla Pagel, Brooke Phillips and freshman Elaina Christiansen produced the Beavers’ three runs in the game.

Augustana led the scoring with a run in the top of the second but the Beavers rallied quickly in the bottom of the third to tie the game when Pagel hit an RBI single. The RBI was the 105th of the senior’s career and tied her with Lyndsey Peterson for the most RBI in program history. Bemidji State didn’t take long to take the lead over the Vikings and in the bottom of the fourth, Christiansen hit an RBI single that scored Olivia Tucker from third for the 2-1 lead. In the very next at bat, Phillips hit a triple to right-center that scored Christiansen for the two-run lead.

Dullum and the Beavers’ defense was dominant in the game and allowed just seven hits in the game including just three hits in the final three innings. Dullum earned the complete game victory to end her sophomore campaign with an 11-15 record.

Senior Jessica Burlingame led the Beavers with three hits in the game and came in to score one run while Pagel followed with two hits and an RBI.

(14) Augustana 3, Bemidji State 0
Amber Elliott was dominant in the circle for the Vikings as she held the Beavers to just four hits over seven innings of work. Augustana’s lone runs in the game came in the second and third innings after a solo home run by Maggie Kadrlik in the second and two RBI doubles from Shannon Peterson and Kadrlik brought in the game’s only runs.

Bemidji State had a chance to put a run on the board with a double from Phillips, her conference-leading 20th of the season, but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Senior Kelsey McAllister started the game in the circle for the Beavers, her first pitching appearance since 2017, and allowed just one run off of three hits to earn the loss. Freshman Kaidron McClafferty came in to pitch three innings in relief while senior Rochelle Koshalek pitched the final two innings and gave up just two hits.
