Bemidji State softball picked to finish 12th in NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team was picked to finish 12th in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll announced Friday in a poll that is voted on by league coaches.

Seniors Lisa Kossan and Stephi Dullum were tabbed as the Beavers’ Preseason Players to Watch while Bemidji State garnered 65 points in the poll. Augustana University was picked to finish first in the poll for the second consecutive season and senior pitcher Ashley Mickschl was selected as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year for the Vikings. Winona State University senior Alison Nowak was tabbed as the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year.

The Bemidji State University softball team returns 12 letter-winners from a 2020 season that was shortened to just 22 games due to COVID-19. The Beavers posted a 10-12 record during the 2020 season and head coach Brittany Gomez-Olson has added seven newcomers to the team for the 2021 season.

 

Lisa Kossan returns for her senior season after her first season with the Beavers a year ago. She appeared in 18-of-22 games for the Beavers and finished third on the team with a .333 batting average with 17 hits in 51 at bats. And totaled seven RBI, one home run, and five doubles to finish third on the team with a .490 slugging percentage. The Beavers also return junior Elaina Christiansen after she finished second on the team last season with a .375 batting average and led the team with 24 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. Christiansen also was second on the team with five home runs and 16 RBI. 

In total, he Beavers return eight positions in the field and only lost shortstop Olivia Tucker to graduation.

In the circle, senior Stephi Dullum leads the BSU pitching staff after posting a 1.99 ERA last season in 13 appearances and a 4-3 record. Dullum led the team with 34 strikeouts last season and has appeared in 70 career games for the Beavers and is tied for fourth in program history with 23 career wins. Dullum also ranks sixth in the program with a career ERA of 3.19 and seventh with 199 career strikeouts.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
