Beavers split first day of Hy-Vee Classic

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Bemidji State University softball team split the first day of the Hy-Vee Classic in St. Jospeh, Mo., Saturday afternoon after falling to Missouri Southern State University 11-2 in six innings but responded with a 1-0 shutout of Missouri Western State University in game two to snap an eight-game losing streak.

Bemidji State senior pitcher Stephi Dullum earned a complete game shutout in game two to power the Beavers (3-9) to victory.

The Beavers fell in the first game of the weekend to Missouri Southern State by score of 11-2 in six innings. Bemidji State was out-hit in the game 14-6 and left eight runners on base compared to seven by the Lions. Sophomore Emmarie Yeager led the Beavers with two hits and went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI while senior Lisa Kossan and sophomore Ashely Herold each hit doubles in the game.

Redshirt freshman Kyla Damerow earned the loss in the circle and falls to 0-5 on the season after pitching four innings and allowing four runs off of nine hits. Freshman Stella Dolan came in to pitch two innings in relief and allowed five runs off of five hits and had three strikeouts.

Bemidji State senior pitcher Stephi Dullum led the Beavers to a 1-0 victory in the second game of the day to snap an eight-game losing streak for the Beavers. Dullum threw a gem for the Beavers and pitched a complete game shutout to earn her third victory of the season and improve to 3-1. Dullum allowed just five hits and one walk in the game while earning four strikeouts including two in the bottom of the seventh. 

The Beavers scored their lone run in the game in the second inning when Stephi Dullum hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Yeager. Bemidji State totaled six hits in the game but failed to extend its lead after leaving 12 runners on base.

Bemidji State concludes play at the Hy-Vee Classic tomorrow afternoon when it plays Northwest Missouri State Univeristy at 10 a.m., followed by No. 9 Rogers State University at noon.
