BSU Softball splits final day at Hy-Vee Classic

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Bemidji State University softball team split the final day of the Hy-Vee Classic in St. Joseph, Mo., Sunday afternoon after falling to Northwest Missouri State University 9-1 in five innings but responded with a 6-1 upset of No. 9 Rogers State University in game two.

For the Beavers (4-10), it was their first win over a nationally ranked opponent since April 27, 2019, a 3-1 win over Augustana University.

The Beavers conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 4-10 record and begin Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Tuesday, March 30 with a doubleheader against University of Minnesota Crookston in Bemidji.

Bemidji State allowed nine runs off of 15 hits to fall to Northwest Missouri State 9-1 in five innings in game one of the day. The Beavers totaled just four hits in the game and were led by senior Lexi Derrick who scored the Beavers’ lone run of the game with her second home run of the season.

Redshirt freshman Kyla Damerow earned the loss in the circle and falls to 0-6 on the season after pitching 3.2 runs and allowed eight runs (seven earned) off of 12 hits. Freshman Stella Dolan came in to pitch 1.1 innings in relief and allowed just three hits, one run and earned two strikeouts.

Senior Stephi Dullum dominated in the circle for the second consecutive game and held No. 9 Rogers State to just three hits, one run and earned six strikeouts. Dullum walked two batters in the game but didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning where the Hillcats scored their lone run in the game. 

The Beavers totaled eight hits in the game, led by sophomore Ashley Herold who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Senior Sami Dullum batted 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and came in to score a run while Derrick and Stephi Dullum each recorded RBI’s in the game.

With the win, Dullum improves to 4-1 on the season and leads the Beavers in the circle.
