Beavers earn sweep over Cougars in walk-off fashion

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team earned its first sweep of the 2021 season Saturday afternoon after defeating University of Sioux Falls by scores of 6-3 and 5-3 in eight innings at the BSU Softball Field. The Beavers’ (7-13, 3-3 NSIC) sweep was highlighted by a walk-off, two-run home run by senior Lexi Derrick in the eighth inning of game two.

Bemidji State began the day with a 6-3 victory over the Cougars (9-11, 3-3 NSIC) in game one where they totaled seven hits and redshirt freshman Kyla Damerow pitched a complete game to earn her first victory of the season. The Beavers started the scoring in the first inning when Derrick hit an RBI double followed by sophomore Ashley Herold who drove in Derrick with an RBI single.

The Cougars added a run in the second and then another in the top of the third to tie the game but another RBI from Derrick in the bottom half of the third and another RBI single from Herold gave the Beavers a 4-2 lead. BSU improved its lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs off errors while Damerow closed out the game by allowing just one run in the seventh to earn the 6-3 victory.

For Damerow, it was her first complete game of the season and allowed just three runs off of seven hits and earned four strikeouts.

Derrick and Herold each led BSU with two RBI in the game while senior Sami Dullum batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Bemidji State and Sioux Falls battled in another tight contest for game two and were forced to go into extra innings after each team scored three runs after seven innings. The Beavers started the scoring in the first with an RBI double off the bat of Derrick and then extended their lead to 3-0 in the second inning when senior Lisa Kossan hit a two-RBI single.

However, Sioux Falls responded in the top of the third with a three-run inning to tie the game. Neither team could crack the other team’s pitcher throughout the rest of the game until Derrick hit a two-run home run to centerfield in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off victory. For Derrick, it was her team-leading third home run of the season and now leads the team and is tied for 10th in the NSIC with 18 RBIs.

Senior Stephi Dullum started the game in the circle for the Beavers and pitched three innings, allowed three runs off of six hits and had two strikeouts. Freshman Stella Dolan was spectacular in relief in pitched five innings, didn’t allow a run or hit and earned five strikeouts to earn her first collegiate victory and move to 1-2 on the season.

Bemidji State begins a 10-game road trip next week by traveling to St. Cloud State University Wednesday, April 7 for a doubleheader followed by traveling to Northern State University and Minnesota State University, Moorhead, April 10-11.
