Beavers swept by Bulldogs in cold doubleheader

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team fell in both games of its doubleheader against University of Minnesota Duluth Wednesday afternoon. The Beavers (9-23, 5-13 NSIC) fell in game one to the Bulldogs (22-10, 12-6 NSIC) 8-0 in six innings and then fell in game two, 4-1.

Bemidji State redshirt freshman Kyla Damerow held the Bulldogs to just two runs through the games’ first five innings but Minnesota Duluth exploded for a six-run sixth inning to defeat the Beavers 8-0 in six innings in game one.

Bemidji State was out-hit 8-3 in the game with Damerow earning the loss in the circle after pitching 5.1 innings and allowed seven earned runs off of seven hits and had four strikeouts. Freshman Stephanie Ferguson led the Beavers with two hits in the game and went 2-for-2 while junior Jennifer Smith recorded the other hit for BSU.

Freshman Stella Dolan came in to pitch 0.2 innings in relief and allowed one hit and one walk while picking up one strikeout.

Bemidji State struggled in most of game two to solve UMD pitcher Lauren Dixon who held the Beavers to just four hits and one run. Dixon earned 12 strikeouts for the Bulldogs and held the Beavers scoreless until the seventh inning.

The Beavers recorded their lone run in the series in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Maddy McCann hit an RBI single. Minnesotoa Duluth scored a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth en route to the 4-1 victory.

Senior Stephi Dullum earned the loss in game two after she pitched all seven innings allowing four runs off of nine hits and earned five strikeouts.

Bemidji State continues play at home this weekend and will host Minnesota State University, Mankato Saturday followed by Concordia University-St. Paul, Sunday. Both series are scheduled to start at Noon & 2 p.m.
