Softball honors its five seniors during doubleheader with Minot State

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team honored its five seniors in part of senior day Saturday afternoon in its doubleheader against Minot State University. The Beavers (10-30, 6-20 NSIC) were swept by Minot State (21-19, 14-12 NSIC) by scores of 13-5 in five innings in game one and then 6-2 in game two.

Seniors Sami Dullum, Lisa Kossan, Lexi Derrick, Gabi Bingham and Stephi Dullum were all honored in between games of the doubleheader in part of senior day festivities.

The Beavers had a slow start in game one against Minot State and were held hit-less through the games’ first three innings but only trailed MiSU by one run after three. However, Minot State exploded for 11 runs in the fourth inning to take the 12-0 lead.

The Beavers attempted to battle back and scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI single from Stella Dolan to make it 12-2. Minot State added another run in the top of the fifth to take the 13-2 lead while Bemidji State responded in the bottom half of the innings with three runs including RBI’s from senior Lisa Kossan and sophomore Emmarie Yeager. However, the large lead for the Beavers was too much and ended the game 13-5 after five innings.

Bemidji State totaled six hits in the game and were led by Yeager who batted 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.

Senior Stephi Dullum earned the loss in the circle and falls to 6-10 on the season after she pitched three innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) off of seven hits. Freshman Stella Dolan pitched two innings in relief and allowed six runs (one earned) off of eight hits.

Minot State got off to another early start in game two by scoring two runs in the first inning while BSU was held off the scoreboard until the fifth inning. MiSU added runs in the second and third innings to go up 4-0 and later extended its lead to 6-0 with a two-run fifth inning.

The Beavers responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth when junior Kora Martin hit an RBI single and then later cut the lead to 6-2 in the sixth when Sami Dullum scored on an error. However, the Beavers could only drive in the two runs and fell in game two 6-2.

Redshirt freshman Kyla Damerow pitched five innings and allowed six runs (four earned) off of six hits to earn the loss and fall to 3-11 this season while junior Kaidron McClafferty pitched two innings in relief and didn’t allow a run while giving up five hits.

Bemidji State ends its 2021 season tomorrow afternoon by hosting Univeristy of Mary for a doubleheader at Noon and 2 p.m. The doubleheader will be sponsored by StrikeOut Cancer and BSU will be accepting donations to help the Brighter Tomorrows Foundation.
