Beavers end 2021 season with split versus Marauders

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team played its final doubleheader of the 2021 season Sunday afternoon and snapped a five-game losing streak by splitting its doubleheader with University of Mary.

The Beavers (11-31, 7-21 NSIC) snapped the losing skid with a 4-3 victory in game one but then fell to the Marauders (9-32, 8-20 NSIC) 5-3 in game two.

Bemidji State finishes the season 13th in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings and miss out on a bid into the NSIC Softball Tournament.

Bemidji State used four runs off of five hits to defeat Mary in game one, 4-3, after senior pitcher Stephi Dullum pitched the complete game in her last start as a Beaver. The Beavers opened the scoring with an RBI single from senior Lexi Derrick in the first inning and then later extended their lead to 3-0 in the third when junior Jennifer Smith and Derrick each drove in runs.

Mary responded however, in the next inning with a three-run fourth inning but Dullum and the Beavers’ defense held the Marauders to just three runs. The Beavers scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run in the fifth when Smith tallied her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Derrick and Smith each led BSU with two RBI while Derrick finished the game by batting 2-for-3 while Smith went 1-for-2 with a double.

Dullum pitched her seventh complete game of the season to earn the victory and improved to 7-10 by allowing just three earned runs off of seven hits and had six strikeouts.

Bemidji State got on the scoreboard first for the second consecutive game and took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ali Schak drove in Sami Dullum. However, the Marauders responded in the next inning with a three- run third inning to take the 3-1 lead.

The Beavers narrowed the Marauders’ lead to 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning when Derrick hit a sacrifice fly but two more runs by Mary in the fifth extended their lead to 5-2. BSU added a run in the sixth off of an RBI double by Schak but were held to just three runs by Mary pitcher Kaitlyn Alvarado.

Smith led the Beavers with two hits in the game while Maddy McCann and Schak each recorded doubles while Schak led BSU with two RBI.

Junior Kaidron McClafferty earned the loss in the circle and ends the season 0-8 after she pitched six innings and allowed five runs (three earned) off of eight hits while also earning five strikeouts. Freshman Stella Dolan pitched one inning in relief and didn’t allow a hit.
