Jenna Helgeson added to Bemidji State softball coaching staff

BEMIDJI, Minn. --  Bemidji State University Softball Head Coach Jordan Petersen has announced the addition of Jenna Helgeson to her staff. Helgeson, who will serve as an assistant coach, comes to BSU after two seasons at her Alma Mater Northern State University, where she was a graduate assistant coach following a four-year playing career.

In two seasons as an assistant at NSU, Helgeson was responsible for organization of individual and small group hitting instruction, coordination of academic study table, organizing team community service initiatives, travel arrangements, field maintenance, youth camp instruction, and she assisted in the recruiting process, in addition to in-game and practice coaching duties. She was a part of a coaching staff that led the Wolves to a program-best 10-0 start in 2020 before the season was cut short due to COVID-19.

Helgeson also has an extensive background as a youth skills instructor and coach. This summer, she served as the softball director at Camp Lenox, a sports camp in Otis, Mass. There she supervised children age 7 to 16 and was responsible for daily softball instruction. She also has experience as a softball instructor at D-Bat Sioux Falls, where she gave hitting, pitching and fielding instruction to softball players of all ages and was part of a leadership team that orchestrated youth and team camps as well as serving as a group lessons instructor. In addition, Helgeson also spent time from 2016-18 as an assistant coach for the Sioux Falls Diamonds organization.

As a student-athlete, Helgeson was a member of the NSU softball team from 2015-19. Before her career was shortened due to injury in 2019, she started 107 games in the Wolves’ outfield. As a sophomore (2017), she led a 29-26-1 NSIC team, which advanced to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament, in home runs (8), RBI (36), doubles (15), walks (25) and batting average (.364). She was also a three-time selection to the NSIC All-Academic Team.

Helgeson is a 2019 graduate of Northern State with a degree in human performance and fitness.  She is currently working toward a Master’s Degree in sports performance and leadership from NSU.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and Western Collegiate Hockey Association, respectively, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
