Beavers Wrap up Road Swing with a Three-Game Loss to South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. - Freshman outside hitter Brittney Burns (Henderson, Minn.) led the Bemidji State University volleyball team in kills for the 11th time in 13 matches Friday afternoon collecting 13. She would also post a team-high .270 hitting percentage. But it would not be enough as BSU fell to the University of South Dakota in three games (30-24, 30-25, 30-21) in non-conference competition at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.

South Dakota came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. The Coyotes recorded 22 kills on 46 attempts while committing just five errors for a sizzling .370 hitting percentage in a 30-24 game one win over BSU. Bemidji State also posted its best hitting percentage of the match in the first game as the Beavers combined for .152 (13k-6e-46att).

Games two and three were much of the same as USD collected 19 kills in game two and 16 in the third, hitting better than .278 in each of the last two games to finish the sweep (30-25 and 30-21).

The Beavers' offense continued to sputter managing to hit just .113 and .075 in final two games of the match respectively. For the match, the Beavers hit just .115, marking the 12th time in 19 matches that the Beavers have failed to make the .200 plateau.

In addition to Burns leading the team in kills and hitting percentage she paced BSU with a match-high 37 total attacks. Senior setter Kristin Smith (Rockford, Ill.) led the offense collecting 24 assists while four other players registered at least one assist.

Defensively, senior Kristine Engman (Virginia, Minn.) transitioned back to a defensive specialist role after spending the first portion of the season at outside hitter with a team high 14 digs. Her replacement on the Beavers' front line, junior Christa Anderson (Siren, Wis.), led the team with three blocks in addition to five kills on 12 attempts. Senior Heather Haugen (Lanesboro, Minn.) was also a force on defense as she compiled 12 digs and a block. In all, the Beavers posted five blocks.

South Dakota was led Friday by Kristin Miller who recorded a match-high 19 kills on 37 attempts for a .378 hitting percentage. Liz Selzer posted 45 assists while Lindsey Soukop moved into the top spot on the Coyotes all-time digs list collecting 19 in the match for a career total of 1,346.

The Beavers (6-13; 2-5 NSIC) return to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Tuesday when they return to its home-away-from-home, the Bemidji High School Gymnasium, to host the University of Minnesota, Crookston at 7:00 p.m. The Beavers will be playing the remainder of thier season at the BHS Gym due to renovations in the BSU Gymnasium.
